Put together, trouble from the start

I put my computer together. The dvd was doa, so I have my old one in it. It lights as if it's reading.

The good news:
all the fans are running
the motherboard ready light turns red (which is on)

The bad news:
I'm having trouble with the case to motherboard connectors. I've switched them several times. The most I can get is a power light. I can't get a drive light or any beeps from the speaker.

I have no video output. The monitor worked a week ago.

I can't tell if the hd is powered at all.

I hardly know where to start.

Thanks for any/all help.

There may very well be a speaker on your motherboard. Which motherboard is it? I know I had trouble, too. I used my case manual as it had the listings as to where each connector went, and I'm sure your motherboard will, too. Here is what my manual says:

12345
: : : : : <---pins
aaaaa (top)
bbbbb (bottom)

2a,3a = Reset
2b,3b = On/Off
4a,5a = hdd light
4b,5b = pwr led - this was diff. on my motherboard. The pwr led was elsewhere, seperate.

I hope that's clear.

My problem with the case to mobo connection is which way they point. The connectors are labeled. Do the words point inboard (toward the cpu) or outboard?

Here's whats in the case:

DVD+/-RW NEC ND-3550A BK
VGA EVGA GF7950GX2 01G-P2-N592-AX R

PSU OCZ|OCZ700GXSSLI 700W RT

It doesn't matter, if your talking about which direction they are facing, but if your talking about how they are placed, it's usually like this: === (for a 3 pin connector)

I have them all in the right place. The problem is that the mobo manual says that they might need to be turned 180 degrees if they don't work.

Honestly, though, my main problem is that I have the worlds most expensive fan. I can live without a drive light. I'd like to get the doggone thing running.

Just flip the connectors 180 degrees if they are on the correct pins.

But more importantly, you need to get the build to POST. Try this outside the case: http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=132409

Okay, an update.

Followed the advice for outside the box assembly. Fans are running on PSU, CPU and video card. No beeps, no video.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Do you have ALL of the auxillary power connectors plugged in? (mobo/video card)

There's an aux power connector for the video board, but I have only the big (24 pin?) power connector to the mobo. It does have a light that indicates that it's gone from sleep to powered-up. Am I missing another power connector?

There is a 4pin 2x2 power connection above the CPU that you need to hook up.
