splat computer starts for a sec then stops?

just finished building my first rig a couple days ago. Everything seemed to working fine for a few days. I was able to start and run my pc just fine. recently though, my computer just shut down by itself.

when I tryed to start is back up I pushed the button, and the computer turns on just long enough for the LED's to turn on and the fans to turn for about a second, then then everything immediatly shuts down and when I push the button again, nothing happens, not even the lights or fans start.

When I turn off my PSU and then on again, I am able to start it for the 1-2 seconds with the fans and lights, but then shuts off again, and it doesn't seem to start up no matter how many times i try.

Is my PSU bad? not enough power?

HELP PCMECH!

Can you give us some specs? Especially the power supply brand/model?

Look at PSU first. Then................ it may be time for the OOC Test!

That power supply probably isn't strong enough to power that video card, etc; is it? Also check your CPU temps in the BIOS.

OOC = Out of Case test
http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=132409

That isn't a proper PCI-E capable power supply. It's OK for an AGP build, but not for a PCI-E build...might be a problem there.

Sure, something from a trustworthy brand with dual 12v. rails, such as these:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817103931
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817104934
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817104954

But try the out of case build troubleshooter first before you spend anymore money.

Also could be your cpu temps. It's possible the heatsink isn't making good contact with the cpu, which would make it overheat and shut off quickly.

thanks new builder!

well, for the few times that I actually ran my computer, the temperatures on everything looked okay. The CPU never ran hotter than 35C.

An insufficient PSU sounds like it would explain why I had a couple random shutdowns.
I'll try running an OOC test tomorrow.

thanks for helping guys!

Any way you can get into your Bios and check if the voltage readings are accurate? let us know what they say. Look somewhere in the Advanced tab, or similar. That would show us if it were indeed a PSU problem. But I have to tell you, the way you described your problem leaves me with no doubts it's your PSU.

only one thing botheres me, a couple days ago, I was able to play quake 4 for hours. if my power supply wasn't sufficient, wouldn't I have not been able to use it like that? Wouldn't I have had this problem from the start?

If I cant get it to wrok during an OOC test, I'll be ordering an FPS group AX500-A 500W

pcmech has saved my computer!

Not yet. Just kidding. But yeah, if your power supply is low quality, playing games for such long periods could definately burn it out.

without your help, I'd still be cursing like a sailor!
last question! can I be sure that 500W will be enough? I just don't want to have to repeat this process again unless absolutely necessary

You can absolutely be sure that that 500w PSU from FSP will be enough. Even 420w would be enough if it were from a reputable manufacturer.
