LCD or CRT

I am building a computer I have gotten everything, except the processor and monitor. All the other parts were purchased with help from this group.. I have only the processor and monitor left to get. I am pretty sure I am going to get the dual core amd, however the price on the 3800 keeps going up and up. Not sure if the dollar amount is worth it. My main purpose of this computer will be gaming..(ie)WOW. and first person shooters. After reading some reviews of lcd monitors, for gaming is it best to get a crt monitor? for the refresh rate? is this correct? I can get a cheap lcd 19 inch for a bit more than a crt. I want to get the best bang for my buck for the monitor?

When it comes to whick kind of monitor to choose from, I would go to a store and check out the differences between the CRT and LCD. That way you'll know which type you prefer, some people notice small imperfections on LCD monitors no matter how good the response time is and some people don't (I'm the later). While LCD monitors have made great strides in response time it's my opinion that you should check out them personally that way you won't be saying to yourself "I should have bought a CRT or LCD monitor instead". With that being said I personally like my LCD monitor for gaming and for other things like Photoshop, plus my monitor isn't hogging up my desktop (It's even mounted on the wall ).

I'm a fan of CRTs, but LCDs have come a long way. However, ones that are good for gaming are not normally cheap.

I have just bought a second screen (finaly dual screen is mine!) and its teh cheapest that I could find about $100 and its sitting next to my other screen. The other screen is a gaming monitor and cost the guy I bought it from $3500 (not a typo: three and a half grand.). I can't see the differance. I've played FPSs and Doom 3 on both and they perfom nearly identicaly.

To be honnest I would go for an LCD, their performance is much better than a few years ago and really CRTs are going out of the window.

Again, thats just my opinion, good luck with what ever you choose.

As far as I am concerned the only advantage of a CRT over an LCD is price.

If you can't affort a decent LCD then go for a CRT

$3,500? I would guess it is pretty old... how old is it? Apple's big 30 inch that get rave reviews is under $2K.

I just bought a Samsung 931B 19" LCD monitor to replace a dying 8 year old Sony CPD-220GS 17" CRT monitor and can say I'm very satisfied with the image quality of the Samsung.

I have one of those Dell widescreen monitors, and I must say that I love it. Whenever I use CRTs my eyes hurt, and it's not nearly as bright. This one I have set at lowest brightness setting and it's still too bright at night. =/

Also, the features are great....other monitors are cheaper, but don't have any of the features of higher-end ones, like PiP, calibration, quick mode switching (excellent for me, as I have my 360 hooked up via VGA and computer via DVI, and I can switch between 'em instantly).

Okay thanks for the info, however what do I need to compare. As far as features or things that I should be shopping for to get the best for an lcd monitor. I have heard some horror stories about lcd not lasting that long, having dead pixels and the light or something for the lcd going out? where as crt seem to not have any real draw backs. I have a 17 in crt currently for about the last 5 years and have had no problems. Is there really any difference between the 2?

Yes, CRTs will last you longer...but in 5 years, when your LCD might begin to fail, all monitors will be LCD (probably), and technology will be so advanced that they'll be dirt cheap and much better than they are now. A friend of mine bought 5 dell widescreen monitors a few years ago, and I don't think they've ever been turned off, as he leaves his gaming room turned on 24/7/365. All of them still work perfectly though.

At present Sony are quoting 20years use without any loss in quality with their LCD screens...that's the same as with a CRT.

True...LCD can go wrong but normally earlier in its life rather than later. If you are worried then go for one which come swith a 3 or 5 year warranty

LCD monitors are said to be easier on your eyes (no flickering), they use less energy, they take up much less space on your desk, are lighter so they're easier on your back when setting up or moving them and are said to have more vibrant colors and sharper image quality.

I thought the expected lifespan of a CRT monitor was about 7 years...about the same as a regular tube TV.
