Up Grade Suggestions

I'm looking to upgrade my younger daughters old pc that I put to gether 3 yrs ago.. It is about time, because it is slow as heck, and she has been complaing about it for some time..
Her current specs are

MB Asus P4G8X Rev 1.0 (known deluxe)
CPU Intel Celeron 2.5 ghz
Memory 256Mb (2x128) Elixar DDr I believe pc 1600
Video Card is a GForce 4200

Im not looking to upgrade the video card, it is suitable for her needs.. Just basically the ram and cpu.. What type of intel cpu and want to max it out... I know when I first put it together a the board did not support the prescott cpu I had orginally purchased... Thanks

Being that it's 3 years old, I assume it's a socket 478 motherboard. I'm really not sure what type of CPU it can take, but look at this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819116175

With this you will need a heatsink fan:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835106606

As for the RAM, no one really sells PC1600 RAM anymore... that being said, you may want to forget what I said and just get a totally new, cheap setup.

How about this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131041
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819116001
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145569

More than likely I'll be buying those parts myself. Also you may or may not need a new power supply. I recommend this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817104901

I found this one here.. I found some infor on the board and it says northwood only. So I assume this is the one.. The board itself is still running strong so new board is out of the question.. It has a ANTEC 350 watt psu already...

Here's the best CPU you can get for that board:
P4-3.06 GHz (533 FSB, L2 cache:512KB, HT, C1/D1)

I doesn't support Prescotts though.

go to http://support.asus.com/cpusupport/c...Language=en-us and plug in your mobo model # and you'll get compatible CPU's.

I checked Corsiar's configurator, and it looks like the board takes standard DDR 333 or DDR 400

If you ask me, I would do a RAM upgrade first. That should help quite a bit. 256MB is pretty light...what OS is the machine running?

Yeah, I would get the CPU cooler I suggested and some Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound. Also go ahead and get that Northwood. As for the RAM my suggestion is 2x256mb Corsair ValueSelect DDR400.

Check at your local Compusa/Best Buy/Microcenter for the ram. They will be more expensive and may not have many brand choices(mostly genric or PNY/Kingston)

As for the HSU, if the Celeron has a standard Intel P4 heatsink and fan, just reuse that if you go with an OEM CPU.

Ok new problesms.. I just upgraded this machine.. I added 2 sticks of Kingston Value ram 1 gig (2x512) and a new 300GB Maxtor hd with 16mb cache.. I also removed the celeron processor and cleaned off the old past and applied some new artic silver.. Installed everything back to the way it was.. Now when powering it on it doesn't run.. It just runds for maybe a second and shuts down again.. Right now I'm removed the battery to clear the cmos to see what happens.. Any ideas..

Well I thought it was the ram.. Manual says it supports pc 1600 or pc 2100 I purchased pc2700.. So I reinstalled the old ram and same thing it won't power so it can't be the ram...

Swaped out psu also it was a cheap 300 watt lying around, but that doesn't seem to help either.. Im hoping it is the board itself

If you did not unplug the power cord or turn off the rear power switch when you swapped the ram and/or removed/reinserted the processor, you may have zapped the motherboard.

PC2700 and PC3200 is compatible with the board, it will just run at PC2100 speeds. Only Northwoods are compatible, up to and including 533 FSB.

Suggestion - if the mobo is in fact bad, get one of these:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131029

Put a Pentium-D 805 in it and it will scream.

I did un plug the power before I changed out the ram, and removed the cpu.. I also tried the out of the box build and nothing....Ya I will most likely get that one, cause it does support her current video card..

Ok one question. The wife wants this machine up and running today. I leave tomorrow for another 3 weeks as I am a truck driver.. So that means I will have to buy the parts from a local store.. There is one called Frys which is huge and has nothing put computer parts.. Which brands to stay away from cause the have lots and which brands including Asus to stick with... I will be purchasing a new mb, cpu and need a inexpressive video card.. This place already doesn't have any which support AGP except one so I guess pci will be next.. I do believe the board brand is a ECS which is a socket 775. with a AGP slot.. But not to sure it that board is any good.. Thanks

Ok this is what I bought.. MB Intel D102GGC2 socket 775 CPU Intel PD 945 1GB (2x512) Kingston DDR2 PC4200. PSU ANTEC Smart power2.0 350W

The md has 2 pins for pw lead 2 pins for on off it says 2 pins for HD and 2 pins for reset.. Plus 3 pin for alternate power lead.. Case has a 3 pin for power lead 2 pin for hd 2 pin for power sw and 2 pin for reset sw. No matter which way I connect the case to the mb same thing fans spin for a second and then nothing.. What am I doing wrong... All connections for psu are connected correctly.... The case power lead I believe is for the on off button, but this is becoming a huge nightmare and I'm and stuck... Im begining to wounder if the case power connectors are the problem all along...

The on/off button should go to the one marked power sw. The other power lead is probably just going to be the LED that lights up on the case when the power is on. Trace the wire back to the case and see if it goes to an LED or a switch. You can always test the components by just shorting the two power sw posts on the mobo together with a small screwdriver too you know.

Hey juppy I did trace the wires and knew I was hooking them up right.. But still the machine refuses to power on correctly.. This is the same thing that happened to the last board that was in that machine for 3 yrs.. What stinks is I leave for another 2 to 3 weeks tommorow morning and won't have time to fuss with it.. So the daughter is just going to have to use my laptop until I get back...

Nice try, but that's not a very good motherboard, it has an ATI chipset. The P-D 945 isn't that great either, a Core 2 Duo would have been a much better choice in that price range.

Out of case troubleshooting needed.

If the case has a 3 pin power LED lead, it goes on the alternate pins.

That motherboard is listed as OEM on Newegg. Be sure to get the retail version so you have all the cables. If you need onboard video, I just ordered the Asus P5L-MX -- may be a good choice for you as well. Or even better maybe the Asus P5LD2-VM.

Good deal. Make sure you do an out of the case POST with your power supply first. XP will require a repair reinstall.

Ya and I also learned a valuble lesson today.. When in doubt don't throw it out.. What started out as a simple upgrade was a nightmare.. The orginal MB ASUS P4G8X wouldn't power up after the new ram was installed. First I figured wrong size ram WRONG. Then I figured it was the PSU. Went got a new ANTEC 350W Smart Power2.0 same thing now boot.. So I figured dead board.. Went out and bought new mb,cpu,ram.. Put it all together same thing.. So I figured I had another bad board.. Went and ordered new parts from Newegg. Went and returned other parts.. Well psu was tested bad, but the other board was tested good.. It posted when hooked up at the store.. I still got a better deal with the new stuff I bought, but the sad thing is a good ASUS board went to the trash, all because I did not have a psu tester lesson learned... O well

bought this case for the now new build.. It is big for the board going into it, but for the price I figured I can use it for future upgrades.. And for the price I bought it at a local store for $60..
