Exclamation The PC I plan to build, any comments before I go ahead?

I'll be frank with you guys, I want to build a monster machine. A machine that won't be considered "slow" to the average guy for a decade or so. So, here are the specs of the PC I plan to build, I'll exclude things like case and monitor etc.
  • Nvidia Geforce 7900GTX 512MB SLI VIDEO CARD
  • CORSAIR TWINX XMS2 PRO DDR2 @ 5-5-5-12 1000mhz +
  • Maxtor 300GB SATA 1 Hard Drive
  • Intel Core 2 Extreme 2.93GHz X6800 CPU
  • Gigabyte GA-965P-DQ6 Motherboard

Any comments before I go ahead?

If you are gonna spend that kind of money, I'd go with absolute top line components - like even faster ram (CAS 4 or even DDR2-1066), a faster hard drive (Seagate 7200.10), and a 975X based motherboard (Asus P5W DH?).

Don't ignore the power supply, you will want a top line unit here too.

I looked for some hard drives that you recommended, but they all say sata-300. No idea about sata 300, only sata 1 and 2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of sata 300? What motherboards will be compatible?

Oh, and it doesn't seem that the Asus P5W DH is SLI ready (I'm getting an SLI video card)

Oh, and as for the power supply, I'm going to with the Hiper HPU-4K580-MK Type R 580W Modular ATX2.2 PSU - Black UV (CA-005-HP)

The 7200.10 is SATA II, otherwise known as SATA 3.0gb, otherwise known as ATA 300. ANY motherboard with a SATA controller will work with ANY SATA drive.

The 965 boards aren't SLI either. Either board will accept a single card of any type. If you want to upgrade to TWO cards, your choices are as follows:

1. 975X with ATI Crossfire.
2. Nvidia SLI on a Nvidia SLI chipset board (BAD idea with Intel at this time but the best way to go with AMD).

Decent power supply, but if you are going for a top end video card or cards, go stronger.

GLC...you mentioned getting faster RAM. I am getting the P5W, but it only supports up to 800mhz, why bother getting 1066mhz?

Found another PSU, unfortunately not a very well known brand to my knowlage:

Ezcool Infinity 700w @ £62 approx

or, if I can afford it, go for the well know brand:

Thermaltake W0105 700W Toughpower @ £80 approx.

WHich should I go for?

No matter what top line parts you buy today, they will be outdated in 3 years and obsolete in 10.

Oh, you are in the UK? That makes it a bit tougher.

FSP Sparkle FX700-GLN Epsilon 700W ATX2.0 PSU (CA-001-SK)

100 quid at overclockers.co.uk.

Good point on the ram - unless you are gonna try to overclock that beast, but I still would get CAS 4 DDR2-800.

I am REALLY confused! I want a motherboard that will accept the Intel Core 2 Extreme X6800 processor, and two or more SLI graphics cards.

What board should I go for? Bear in mind that I need the BEST.

There aren't any good SLI Intel boards...so far the two haven't mixed well.

Why not one powerful card now, and upgrade as necessary down the road. If you buy $1000 worth of cards, as flanzig1 said, they'll be outdated in a few years.
