New motherboard, CPU, GPU, RAM and old Hard drive

Hello,

I bought a few days ago a massive upgrade for my PC station. This is what I've bought:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS3 Socket T (LGA 775) Intel P965 Express ATX Intel Motherboard

SAPPHIRE 100168L Radeon X1900XT 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 CrossFire Video Card

Pentium Duo 2 Core E6400 CPU

A-DATA Vitesta 1GB (2 x 512MB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Dual Channel Kit System Memory Model ELJPE1908K

GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS3 Socket T (LGA 775) Intel P965 Express ATX Intel Motherboard

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I didn't buy a new hard drive because it was not within my budget range. I figured that I might be able to use the one from my old PC.

When I start up the new PC I get stuck in the very first windows screen and I get an error that Windows could not boot up.

I am beginning to think that my old harddrive and all my new hardware are not seeing eye to eye and that I may need to reformat my hard drive. Before I do this I was wondering if anyone could offer some advice/insight into this problem that I am running into.

I have tried everything that i can think of in the BIOS but have not been able to do any progress. Using the BIOS from the motherboard and going to the 'PC Health' menu everything seems to be in order. The CPU is at a stable 34-35 Celsius (Arctic Cooler 5 ftw!) so I don't think the problem is with the CPU.

If I am indeed in need of reformatting my hard drive could anyone give me a rundown as to how 'blank out' the hard drive with my old PC before transfering all the new hardware back in?

In any event, I'd like to thank anyone that might give me some help in advance for your time and patience with a newb such as myself.

F.

PS: I found that the stock fan from the E6400 is one loud sucker, specially when the PC first boots up. Is this normal?

Okay, maybe the Windows installation from your old build couldn't do well with the new build. Have you tried to do a repair install of Windows?

And also - you don't have to 'blank' out the HDD - only do this when you are giving/selling your HDD.

Being the complete newb that I am, I am not too sure how about to repair windows.

My first PC started with Windows 98 and then Upgraded to Windows 98 HE. How would I go about repairing windows?

you have 98 on this build? you should upgrade. but i believe the repair feature is the same, just boot with the os disc and there should be a repair option. it will look like its reinstalling, but it will just readjust everything without deleting your files.

You should upgrade to WinXp 98 is not able to handle the speeds of the newer technology.. You can get a copy of Xp home OEM from newegg for about $90

You need XP. That chipset is probably not configured for W98. Get an upgrade edition.

Personally I would buy a complete edition...the upgrade options aren't what they are cracked up to be and you are likely to have issues somewhere down the line. Besides, you will likely find there's not a lot of difference in price anyway.

I would buy a new SATA hard drive and an OEM copy of XP and do a fresh reload from scratch. Then I'd take your old IDE drive and put it in a USB housing to get your files off it and keep it for a backup device. The P965 boards don't really get along with IDE drives all that well and Win98 is totally not supported.
