Spend a little bit more money on the processor and go with a core 2 duo, the E6300 is $180 at newegg and will blow your 2 alternatives completely out of the water.

If you do want to stick with one of those 2 choices, the amd will be a little bit faster.

Here's a link that will give you all the numbers you could ever want on CPU performance.

http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu.html

It would be great if you posted a price next to each of your component choices and maybe a link to newegg or another retailer. That saves us the trouble of having to look it up for each one.

New egg is about the best there is.. Less hassle decent prices and if you have to rma a item they do it with no hassle.. I have tried tiger direct and some other places, but they don't touch newegg when it comes to price, guarantee and customer service..

Actually, you can do an excellent C2D build for that budget. I'd go with the C2D.

So would I, however that AMD build looks nice. Just get a quality power supply, the one you selected really isn't.

Yeah, for that price and power level I'd go with the Antec True Power 550 watt. I have it and it works great. It's powering an X2-4600+, X1900XT (512mb version), 4 HDs, 2 optical drives. It never breaks a sweat.

Here's a link to several. I have the one at the bottom that's currently sold out, but everything on that page should be very similar in terms of the stuff on the inside that counts.

It's out of stock at Newegg. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817103931

Look for something from Seasonic, Enermax, Fortron Source, etc.

Did you not click my link? It looks like antec makes several similar ones. Yes, the one I have is out of stock, but pay $10 more (and actually the $10 is a rebate) and you can get the same thing with either one more fan, or the same thing with some pretty voltage meter.

I would also not get a SLI motherboard for an Intel build. Use Intel chipsets. Get a P965 board such as an Asus P5B and a C2D E6300 - and get ram that's on the Asus QVL.

On the AMD build, consider upgrading to one of the Toledo core X2's.

On both, concur with a different PSU. Antec has been having some issues lately, so I'd probably get something like a Fortron AX500-A 2.0.

Need to cut costs a bit after these upgrades? Get a single Seagate 7200.10 SATA hard drive. It's got double the cache of those WD's and running 2 drives in RAID doesn't really do much for you. The 7200.10 is almost as fast as a Raptor.

You can also save some bucks with an Acer monitor - they have models with DVI around $200 and they are as high quality as a Rosewill.

If you are getting NEC burners, go retail with one of them so you get software - OEM is bare drive only.

Just letting you know...newegg is not allways the cheapest...look around, sometimes tiger direct beats it, and sometimes smaller but still reliable stores beat it. Just do some research and you might save yourself a buck or two

Well the other day I bought some parts from Fry's MB Intel D102GGC2 socket 775 CPU Intel PD 945 1GB (2x512) Kingston DDR2 PC4200. They charged me $437 returned them the next day after ordering these parts from newegg.com

ASUS P5PE-VM an Intel Pentium D 805 2.66GHZ Processor, and Corsair 1GB (2x512) DDR PC 3200 for only $238. It isant alwasy cheaper to buy from a local store...

If you are going to stick with a Pentium-D as opposed to a C2D, you don't need DDR2-667 - you can do with DDR2-533 fine. In addition, for the HDD, consider the Seagate 320GB SATA HDD instead. Larger cache, longer warranty, larger capacity, cheaper price.

I only build Intel, but between those 2, I'd pick the AMD because you haven't listened to my suggestions re: either build. Substandard motherboard and processor. The AMD has one of the few motherboard/processor combinations I would even consider.

The XION power supply junk (especially for what they are charging) - you'll want to get something quality, or you're likely to have headaches down the road.

A couple suggestions:

Why not a single, large drive?

Two suggestions. First, bump the hard drives up to 16MB caches for a bit of a boost. Second, your burners do not come with burning software. I'd switch to Lite-Ons, they come with Nero.

Lite-Ons are also reliable, if you wanted to, you can get LightScribe too lol...

and if you went intel, go c2d, with corsair xms2 ram, almost always compatiable with asus boards. but since ur going amd, idk if you look a bit you can find a 4200 for like 10 dollars more.

zipzoomfly.com is also a great place for deals.

Talking Where?

If you look a bit you can find a 4200 for like 10 dollars more.

Is a 4200 better than a 4400? I was not able to find a 4200 where could I find one?

Nope - the 4400 is what you want - that's a Toledo core.

Did you ever look at the Acer monitors I suggested?

Talking Monitors...

I took a look at the Acer monitors n I think the Rosewill monitor is where I am gonna stay. The Rosewill has a better warrenty, price after rebate, power consumption, and weight.

Aha - you didn't say it had a rebate!

You will be fine, I believe Rosewill monitors are made by Acer or a subsidiary.

I'd go with the seagate 7200.10. It's about the same price ($94.99), a little faster, but most importantly has a full 5-year warranty. It's been suggested already.

Should I go with the Duo or stick with the AMD? Is AMD going to follow Intel with its own version of a Core 2 Duo?
