hey y'all...
i'd like to build a desktop workstation primarily for video & sound editing, serious photoshop, etc -- not necessarily for gaming. (also, of course word processing & spreadsheet, etc.) one of the usual computer parts sellers on the web (the big kitty one) has what seems like a great deal on a barebones kit now: Power Up #511 ATX mid-tower care w/ 400w p/s Abit SG-80DC SiS socket 775 micro ATX mobo Intel Pentium D 840 3.2gHz dual core processor Liteon SHM-160P6S1 16x D/L DVD+/- RW Intel socket 775 cooling fan Ultra 512MB PC3200 DDr 400mHz memory for about $270 after rebates. so i figure if i add a good video/graphics card, big SATA hard drive, upgrade memory to 1GB & get windows xp media ctr, i'm all set... (ok, i need to add firewire card, keyboard, mouse, etc...) -- anybody have comments about this setup? good buy or too good to be true? -- any suggestions before i make the plunge about best mid-range video cards for digital video editing, and best SATA (or RAID) drives & configurations? -- any known issues with these components? thanks so much for your input!

Those barebones kits generally have low end parts like the PSU that's with the case and I'm sure someone will say discouraging words on the mobo. TigerDirect isn't well thought of here.

i gathered that, given the lack of references to that outfit here. but, for what it's worth, i've purchased a bunch of upgrade parts from them & so far no problems...
is it best to forgo barebones kits entirely |

Wel, the CPU and ram are already one generation back. But, if on a budget it probably be OK with a quailty PSU.
I do have to say that I have bought barebones kits, mostly to build folding boxes on the cheap. |

Build yourself a quality machine, those parts are not except for the Lite-On. Give us a budget, please.

i have looked at newegg & they seem quite comparable, but hey i'm just a noob at this.
figure a total budget of, say, $1,000 including o/s software. -- is that reasonable for what i'm after? |

Seems fairly reasonable for what you want, but you'll have a tough time getting a good Core 2 Duo system with that.

ok - message received. consensus is: that barebones kit i was looking at is crap.
thanks for everyone's frank comments & to dogdude who recommended a build. anyone else want to suggest a component list at the budget of +/- 1K for doing digital video editing? then i'll do some more research & perhaps post another thread with a new proposed system |

Does this include any gaming? If not, you won't need a real beefy video card.
Plan on 2 gigs of RAM...especially for video editing. Also you'll probably want a hefty sized hard drive for storage.

it's not primarily for gaming, so i'll say don't consider gaming in design.
i also have an external hard drive w/ firewire, so don't need a huge internal drive |

You will need a Firewire card adapter if your motherboard doesn't have one then.
