SATA noob question
Sata.
Is this different from IDE or just a modified IDE? Is it quicker? Are these widley supported by most MOBOs? or just the newer ones?

Serial ATA is different from IDE because it transfers data faster and has smaller cables, and for probably one or two more reasons that my noob self does not know. It is supported by most motherboards but really depends how far back your talking about. Within 3 years I would think so.

Pandab34r, please do not hijack other people's threads. Also, if you need to correct a mistake in a post, please use the Edit button instead of quoting your whole post in a new post. Thank you.

I also have a questing about SATA? My mobo supports SATA150 but if I buy a 300 Drive will the speed be backwords compatible? I'm just thinking of upgrading. I want something I can put in a new build down the road.

The nice thing about SATA is that SATA 150 and 300 are interchangable. There isn't a performance difference between 150 and 300 anyways. I wouldn't say SATA isn't any faster than a good IDE drive (ie, one that isn't 8 years old) either, but maybe a slight bit.
My older system with a 865PE chipset has native SATA support and it's over 3 years old.

My Asus board also supports Native Sata. As you say It may not be much faster but I'm also thinking of having a newer drive that wont be on it's last limb. Right now I use my WD160 for games and mp3 but I have about 20GBs left. My main drive is an older 40GB for my operation system. So I'm thinking of two SATA drives an 80 and 300GB. Do you know a good free HD duplicator program?

If you want free, you need to use the setup software offered by the hard drive manufacturer. However, the $30 for Acronis True Image would be $30 well spent in the long run, you can also use it for creating compressed backup images.

okay,
So down the road I'm planning on building my own PC. I was planning on using one of my IDE drives in my current system in the new one. But I was planning on using a SATA drive. Can I still use my old HD (IDE) as the second drive? |

Yes, no problem as long as you have an available IDE connector. More and more new boards only have one controller now, max 2 drives - and if you have 2 opticals there's no place to put an IDE hard drive unless you get a SATA optical.
