help! no power to computer

ok, i'm building a core 2 duo machine for my uncle and i installed everything in it. when i press the power button, the power light just blinks and nothing powers except the power light and the little green light on the motherboard. none of the fans run, including the one of the power supply and the cd rom drive tray does not open. when i built my computer a couple months ago, i had a similar problem and i solved it by using a different 2X12 power cord that comes out from the power supply into the mobo and that fixed it. i can't figure out the problem for this one though...

update: anyone know why when i screw in the screws too close to the motherboard, the power turns off? t's like spordic though...like once i get power to everything, i start to screw in the screws then once a get to a random screw, screw it down, it turns off. then it doesn't turn on anymore. i got and unscrew everything, try turning it on, nothing. screw it back in a little, nothing. weird thing is, i take the power supply, put it in my current computer, put it back into the new one and it works . then it'll just go dead and i repeat the process. lol. i give up for the night, i've been working on this **** since 2.

Ok, learn from my mistakes, you need to do a out of case build. Look for New P5B-E mobo install problem in this forum. Scroll through to glc thread site and go to it and do what it said to do. This help in tracking down what is wrong. Plus you need to put up your systen info and ps up so everyone can see if there is a problem or conflic. Jim

It also sounds like you need a new ps if it is shorting out of and on.

Just by principle I'd lose that Ultra power supply in a heartbeat.

thanks for your responses!

specs:
core 2 duo 1.8 Ghz
some ultra cpu fan
intel mobo, i'll get the specific model tomorrow (it didn't come with a manual , just a big sheet that shows you where to put what) that's really ****ty.
WD 250GB HD
NEC DVD burner

i'm a little confused about this step
"10) Use a small screwdriver to momentarily short the power switch connector on the motherboard."

i will try this tomorrow, hopefully it works. how should i go about installing it inside the case then if all goes well outside it? and when i was testing it, i had my hdd and burner disconnected...i'm pretty sure it's not the psu too because it works fine in my other computer.

You can also try a metal tip ball point pen and touch the 2 post for the switch to start the computer. You don't need it to stay on the post. Very strict about language here and butting in on a thread with your own problems. These are two major problems that happen in pcmech. Read other computer owners threads to see how their threads are written. Jim

sorry.

do you mean you have to touch the tip of both ends together? to make both the ends "conect" to create a circuit? and will i have to hold the pen there to keep it running?

Use a small screwdriver - and just touch it to the 2 posts momentarily (like 1 second), it will start and keep running.

does the cpu fan start, is there a led light on the board? Do you have both power plugs plug into the mobo

cpu fan doesn't start, psu fan doesn't start too. there is a led light on the board and both power plugs are in.

i just tried using the psu from my current computer, and same issue...the mobo is sitting outside the case right now.

Okay - find the correct 2 posts for the power switch and short them together momentarily - is this any more understandable?

i put my screw driver in between the two posts and nothing happens. isn't it the same thing if i plug in the power switch cable? i just set the case right next to it and plug it in and that doesn't work too. i forgot to mention this before too, yesterday when i pressed the power button, the led in the front would blink. no LEDs come on today...is my motherboard the problem?

also, i'm not sure if this matters or not but my cpu fan came with this little "x" bracket type thing to put under the mobo for the fan to be screwed onto. and it's metal, does this have to do with anything? since it shorts when i screw the screws too tight to the mobo, maybe it's touching the case? but it still doesn't work outside the case so i don't know...

Seems to me one side of that X bracket should have insulation on it - that's the side that goes toward the motherboard.

yeah, it's like tape so it attaches to the mobo.

What "X Bracket" is he talking about ? Is that some type of adapter that came with the aftermarket CPU fan ?

the bracket attaches to the bottom of the mobo, and that's what your fan screw onto instead of clipping onto the mobo...

i got my new mobo today. i tried doing the out of the case build, and everything worked fine. i think i figured out what my problem was. i didn't put the space in with the screws when i screwed it to the case. you think that shorted it out? thanks everyone for helping me!

You need a SP1 or SP2 CD.
