Compairing Core 2 Duo E6300 1.86GHz with 3.0GHz P4

Compairing Core 2 Duo E6300 1.86GHz with 3.0GHz P4

Thinking of rebuilding. Would the 1.86GHz core 2 be faster than my 3.0GHz P4 HT with 2GB Ram? Thanks

Thanks. I'm still stuck on socket 478 lol. Actually my older dell mobo when bad but the P4 prosessor was fine. I Kinda built a system around that. Now as for furture proof.. or at least a year or two I need a newer mobo with better options. I just want to be ready for the game Crysis. I'm thinking I'm going to be on the slow end when that arives.

Looks like your 478 is maxed out with some rather expensive parts. Too bad you won't be able to reuse a lot of that stuff when you upgrade.

Hold off on your build till Vista and DX10 is out and reasonably debugged.

In most cases I couldn't tell eye-to-eye when I ran my new E6300 head to head with my 640 P4 rig. It was when I ran benchmarks that I found that the E6300 was flooring it all the way around.

(The Intel 530 is close enough to yours, and for some reason they don't have the E6300, but the E6400 numbers give you the idea)

I'd hold off too - you've still got a decent system there.

I'm thinking that also. My computer is kinda like one of those crappy cars with the 20's on it. The rims are worth more than the car itself. Except in this case its my graphic card lol. Well it gets the job done though. I'm pretty conservative so I'll prob take that advise and hold off. Mobos might change a little to accommodate for vista features. Especially being able to just plug any pen drive into a usb port a use it as system memory. I am also sure some company out there will make a DX10 APG card. Hopefully by then I'll have a new system built. Maybe I'll just get the PS3. I'm sure I can't build a system to compete with that for the same price at the moment.

Gee, the way you were going on about the E6300 I thought the difference was purely visible to the naked eye. I'm really not surprised that it wasn't until you ran benchmarks did the differences showed up.

When I was still running my PIII 1GHz computer I really couldn't see much of a difference between it and my older PIII 600MHz. But when I move between my PIII 800MHz and my wife's P4 631 (3.0GHz) I can really see a big difference in speed between the two computers. Of course the 631 is almost 4 times as fast.

Between my 2.8GHz P4 Northwood and my wife's P4 631 there is virtually no difference in performance.

I got a P4 531 and a Foxconn motherboard with huge discounts, and prices are slashed for the 915 motherboards, so I got myself one of these. If the Cores are cheaper by next year, maybe I'll get one of these, along with a stick of DDR2.

Well, the Socket 478 P4 is the fastest among all the 478s. You might want to wait for a while (the waiting game!!) and when prices fall, try to get the videocard which supports DX10, and also the Core.

You have to remember Crickett, my 640 rig is not your conventional 640 rig. I also think that I wasn't really expecting that much from my E6300 ( at first) because of all the unproven hype. I was definitely exstatic that evening. Honestly, it really did surprise me. I remember exclaiming: "----, this thing really does fly!"

What makes it so different?

I seem to remember you saying something similar about the 805 Smithfield system you built.

Yeah, I know. I'm exciteable. I'm a skeptic, so when things work better than I would expect, I go all out. Came from years in the Import Auto Business. When I was doing that, there were always stories about great performers (etc.) and most of those "ultimate" autos always turned out to be dogs. Then I'd get to find one that really was the s--t and go berzerk. I just like excellent performers. Ya know? Oh, and there's nothing really exclusive about the 640. It's just routine, 2 Gig, good graphix card stuff with a PCPC S470 PSU. I just try to keep it clean and take care of it, and it has always done exceptionally well.
