Everything works but cpu?

Heya all,
My computer suddenly stopped working again this morning. Mind you is has died twice in the past 5 weeks, so i am not overly happy. Now it was working fine for about 10 minutes then just turned off for no reason i could see, no blur screen, just off. All the fans start up but the cpu fan. The fan is plugged in. The Graphics card spins up and so does the case fans. Any ideas before i break down the computer and rebuild it?

Thank you,

If a new CPU fan doesn't fix it, then it's time to pull it out of the case as per the sticky thread. If the CPU fan died, it should start up after a cooldown period but will shut down again shortly when the temperature threshold is reached. If you blew the motherboard header for the CPU fan, it's motherboard time - or MAYBE you can use a chassis fan connector or a 3 to 4 wire adapter - IF the motherboard will even start with no CPU fan present where it's supposed to be. You can test the existing fan that way, as a matter of fact.

If the CPU fan is not running then the CPU is probably over heating, that is the first thing to get working.

Can you recommend a new cou heatsink then or can i just replace the fan on the heatsink. It is a stock intel heatsink. I do not think it is the motherboard, as i replaced it 3 weeks ago.

You don't need a new Heatsink. Keep your stock heatsink and just buy a 80mm Fan and screw it back on the heatsink.

I just looked at the heat sink. The intel stock is the same piece as the clips to hole the heat sink to the chip.

Intel stock heatsinks do not have easily replaceable fans, but they DO have a 3 year warranty.

Just because you replaced the motherboard 3 weeks ago does not mean it's not defective.

Plug the fan into one of the chassis fan connectors and see if it starts.

Well i hoped asus board would last longer than 3 weeks, but i seem to be wrong. I moved the cpu fan over to the psu connecter and it spinns right up. The fan is running at about 2760 rpm give or take. Can i run the cpu at this until i conntact asus? Thanks you for the info so far

The BIOS will see that there is no CPU fan and may not finish booting. Just need to try booting. As long as the fan is running, should be OK.

I set up the motherboard to ignore the fact the cpu fan is not there. It is running about 2700rpm. Only random jumps up to 90-99%. There is no reason, it is what ever prog is running in the forground, from spybot to Word. I ran both spychecks and virus. Also my ram is running strangely high.

I think that he has a motherboard problemo. More diagnostics needed.

If the CPU fan works on a chassis fan header or direct to the PSU with an adapter but doesn't run plugged into the motherboard header, the motherboard is bad or you have the CPU fan control misconfigured in the bios.
