Look in my sig for more info.

Asus P5L-MX
Pentium D 805
Corsair Value Select DDR2667
Hard drive of your choice
Antec Sonata II

Very fast, cheap setup. Cost me $400 with no OS, etc.

805s seem to like the old 865 chipsets better. Don't ask me why. I don't think any of the 865 boards come with PCIx16 which sucks. If your parents don't care about retina-burning graphix, the INTEL board should be fine.

I suggest a Pentium D 805 for basic tasks and applications, and more multitasking. And also, you might want to take the DDR2 slots motherboard - the DDR1 are very hard to obtain nowadays, and the prices of these are getting higher.

Have you considered a company-built system instead? At budget prices, their power of bulk purchases shines. While upgradability may be limited, it should, at least initially, give you more for your money. The Dell Dimension E520, specifically, should be a good fit if you decide to go that way.

If you go with the 805 on the P5L-MX, I recommend Corsair Value Select DDR2-667. That's reasonably priced and all you will need. I'd do that rather than the older board for future upgrading flexibility.

GOOD BUT.....

Why Ultra ATA-100 hard drive. You definately want a faster, quieter SATA 3gbps drive:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148144

Other than that I build virtually the same PC and could not have been happier. The motherboard actually comes with software which enables you to monitor your CPU temps. Very convenient.

Seagate 7200.10 SATA is the best way to go with a hard drive. Save $15 and get the 250gb one, and take that $15 and get a Lite-On DVD burner.

You can also knock off 50 bucks with a Foxconn TS1 case if you aren't going to be putting a video card in there. It's got a dual rail 300w Fortron PSU in it. It can handle a modest video card upgrade later if needed.

No. You will need to buy a PCI modem card. I really can't find them on Newegg, though.

EDIT: Here we go: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...SubCategory=18

Hows this

I did according to the sticky-
1) Remove EVERYTHING from the case
2) Set the motherboard on a non conductive surface. The motherboard box is perfect for this. .DO NOT PLACE THE MOTHERBOARD ON THE STATIC BAG! It can acually conduct electricity! We are going to try and assemble a running system outside of the case.
3) Install the CPU and heat sink.
4) Install the RAM (only install 1 stick for SDRAM, 2 for RDRAM)
5) Install the video card
6) Connect the monitor to the video card.
7) Connect the power supply to the motherboard.
8) Connect power to the power supply
9) Do NOT connect ANYTHING else. Make sure you have the power connector on the CPU fan connected.
10) Use a small screwdriver to momentarily short the power switch connector on the motherboard.
The CPU fan came on, the case fan came on and I got a display from the monitor that said
self test G

check your pc
R
and signal cable

monitor is working B

Is this right?
Thanks

You should get a display on your monitor of your BIOS. Do you know for sure that it works?

Do you have both the video and power attached to the monitor?

Do you get any beeps?

I used that same motherboard and never encountered any of that. Here's what you need to do. IMMEDIATELY after you see anything on the screen, hit the DELETE key to enter setup. Once you get here let us know.

Did you plug the small 2x2 power connector into the motherboard in addition to the main 24 pin?

I did everything the sticky said and plugged in the 2x2 plug. Everything is the same except the monitor says
Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press any key. How's this now? Thanks

Connect only the bare essentials. What is the USB mass storage device? Anyway... Try pressing DEL, F1, or F(@?) at startup. Get to the bios setup and check:

-temps
-drives
-etc.

Okay, now go to Advanced and look for hardware monitoring. Check the temps - look for temps below 50C. Now search for where you can see your drives listed. Set your boot order (typically optical then hard drive)
