New Ultra Budget Build in the works.

Hi, thanks for reading.

A friend of mine from work has asked me to see if I can put together a computer that will basically do just email, and internet. I know that once I put it together, my friend will find other uses for it. I WAS trying to come up with something around $300.00 including Windows XP, but it looks as though that was just a dream.

Has no old system to steal opticals, hdd's or any other parts to salvage. No monitor either, but I can get one of those, I have 2 sitting around that are not getting used.

I don't have a video card picked out yet, and I'm starting to think that going with an HP or (God forgive me) maybe even a Dell, would be a better purchase. Could maybe find a bundle with a MIR.

The case has a questionable quality power supply...a quality power supply alone (in that range) costs $40...much less with a case too.

You should go with an SATA drive...it might be a couple bucks more.

Get a LITE-ON or NEC DVD-RW for about $10 more...s/he may want to burn DVD's or CD's, and a DVD burner doesn't cost all that much more.

Why XMS RAM? Some Value Select works just as fine, and is probably cheaper.

See if you can find a board with onboard video...probably won't get a free combo though...

Personally, at this price range, a Dell might be a better deal. The system you put together has twice as much RAM, etc for about the same price, or cheaper (after you add in a quality power supply, etc).

If you are going to use a Rosewill case, use the R604TBLK. It is a VERY GOOD CASE. It is well ventilated and has good storage options. I used it with all 3 of my 805 builds. Take out the power supply and build a test bench with it. That's what I did.

This is a budget build I have put together for someone. They may opt to go with Ubuntu Linux and save $90.00. That puts the system under $300.00. On board video so PCI-e could be added later.

Any oppinions?

I like your motherboard better, I might go with that rather than the AMD Athlon 64 3400+ Venice 2.2GHz combo, the free motherboard doesn't really excite me all that much. I don't plan on that being the most stable system.

The R604TBLK does look like a nice case, more powerfull as well. But a tad more costly. I think I'll go with the R103A.

Was wanting to get a second optical incase she ever wanted to write on the fly, or perhaps watch a DVD on the computer if the TV was being used. But I can get a DVD+/-RW, and eliminate one drive.

Good point, go with a SATA drive, and also good, XMS would be overkill for a budget system. I actually put this together while talking to my wife and having 3 kids behind me with the television on. Not always a good idea to have your desk in the living room.

I'll make the changes and repost the new setup.

-I highly suggest this combo instead with a quality PSU:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811129155
I've used it myself.

-Get this motherboard. ECS motherboards are rather low quality.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131570

-Beige optical drive?

I LOOKED FOR THAT BOARD!!! Couldn't find it, don't know what I was doing wrong, I guess it was on the next page. Yeah, I've used it before on a few builds, really like it. I happen to have an ESC in my daughters computer, she's 10. It was free. My friend said take it out and use it as a placemat.

Ok, thinking of ASUS A8N-VM CSM Socket 939 NVIDIA GeForce 6150 Micro ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail $79.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131570

I'll have to assure my friend that spending a few dollars now, would be much better than replacing parts and spending extra dollars later.

Still undecided about the case though, that's quite a bit more. But I would be getting quite a bit more.

Yeah, I didn't see a good black optical for that price at the moment. I'm sure I can find one later. Just real tired right now.

If you do think that case it too expensive I have another suggestion. It includes a high quality Fortron Source PSU:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811153042

GLC showed it to me - he has used quite a bit of them. I'd go for it on a budget.

To reset: turn computer PSU off and back on, power up.

I have yet to find a well made case with a quality power supply any cheaper than that Foxconn TS1.

Offer your friend the option of a Celeron-D or P-D 805 on an Asus P5PE-VM or P5L-MX. The P5L-MX is even upgradeable to a Core 2 Duo later.

Also from ASUS, but $26.00 less expensive than the A8N ASUS A8V-VM Socket 939 VIA K8M890 ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail $53.99.
Used ASUS boards on about 10 different builds and have never been dissapointed. This board will keep you around the same price as the ECS also.
