What is the BEST AMD out there

Hey guys,

I'm looking for the best AMD type processor to use in a workstation. I'd like the processor to be under $300 or so... nothing too beastly. Socket 939 or AM2 is fine, Opteron or X2. I want it to be somewhat competitive with the Core 2 Duo. Thanks in advance all.

There really is no amd processor that will come close at the 300 dollar range. Maybe comparing a e6300 to a fx62, the fx62 will be better, but will be 600 dollars more.

For budget, amd is fine, but in the higher end range, unless you want amd for the sake of having amd, core 2 duo will obliterate all the choices.

Which in the case you do want amd for the sake of amd, I would pick something in the the high x2 range. Such as the 4800.
Opterons dont necessarily equate to a large performance diff between the desktop processors, they are used due to better silicon resulting in higher overclocks.

Yes

This will be a computer running possibly multithreaded apps.

I guess I will just settle with Intel though, but I am the type who thrives to try different brands.

What's another motherboard I could use with the e6600 besides the Intel Bad Axe, which is good, but I want to try something different. I do not believe Linux is well supported by P965 chipset so keep that in mind.

Its a good thing to try out different platforms and learn, if you can afford it go for it.

Any preference between am2 and 939?

AM2- will allow you to keep ddr2, as all future platforms will be based around that, but it will have a different learning curve.

939-old ddr will limit you in the sense paying big bucks for something obsolete.

EDIT:
For Intel, Some good mobo's for 975x would be ABIT aw9d/max and the asus p5wdh.

You do realize that the latest revisions of the 945 chipsets support C2D? That's a great way to do it from both a budget and chipset maturity standpoint. Look at the Asus P5LD2 R2.0 series.

That too, as long as your not worried about overclocking they are just as stable if not more then some of the more expensive boards.
