Trying to build an In-car PC....Help would be greatly appreciated...
I know that yall have probably been through this before with newbs. I know that I coudl handle building this pc with a few tips from other users on this forum....
First let me start off by telling you what I want to do with this PC. I am going to get a LCD touchscreen to control the basic functions of the computer. I want it to have Media Center (which I have), I will need probably about 150-200 gigs for my music. I want the computer to be able to watch/play dvd's/cd's, Store vast amounts of MP3's, navigation device and a program (I think that will work...any suggestions helpful), and I would like to connect to the internet. I am not quite sure how I am going to connect to the internet..I dont want any antennas showing from my car, so i will probably have to use Verizons Wireless internet Service. My question lies here....I dont know where to start...Should I buy the motherboard and processor, then go from there...Or should I buy a barebone unit with a motherboard and go from there. What would be your suggestion... I dont need a super good processor, do I? I would think that I would need about a gig of ram, basic AMD processor, motherboard with a few pci slots..and a whole bunch of hardrive space....I dont think that I will need a soundcard since all sound will be run through my cd player My email address is rawlingsr@gmail.com if anyone is willing to help...You can post to this forum and i will check it regularly. Thank everyone in advance for their time.... |

This may not be what you're looking for, but I would suggest just getting a business-class laptop, and mounting it in the glovebox or something with a connector going to the touchscreen. You'd be able to take it out and use it normally, and then stick it in and use it in your car. But the main thing is durability...I really can't see a normal computer standing up the harshness of cars...you'd have to get some serious bump protection, like rubber holders for the HD and whatnot...

Ive seen it done before...As long as you have already planned out the modifying that will need to be done. The bigger problem will be getting an ac power source for your powersupply that can provide enough juice...

You can get ruggedized laptops with touchscreens. Look at the Panasonic Toughbooks. I have a customer that uses one in his truck very much like what you want to do. He uses a Sprint EVDO card to connect to the Internet.
Get the biggest hard drive they offer, then you can get external notebook USB drives to hold more stuff. |

Ive seen others that have done this with no problem. The extra cooling needed shouldnt be a problem. I already have a laptop, but i am trying to get away from using this. I think that the hd should be fine, I plan on using something to pad it a little, but I was considering using the hd from a laptop, because they tend to be more durable. I just drive on roads, I have a BMW so the ride shouldnt be that big of a factor.
As far as getting enough power, I have a DC to AC converter, which works fairly well on laptops and other things... |

Not everybody knows everything =/, i myself am not quite sure what your asking...
Im no expert on this, but im not sure if, even with a dcac adapter, the outlet will be able to provide enough juice to continually power a computer. When you recharge, for example, a laptop, the juice is slowly and steadily provided. Ever notice why it takes longer to charge in the car, then at home? Like I said, im not an expert. Otherwise if you do overcome that, you can get a htpc case, they are specially designed for low profile applications. Along with an appropriate powersupply. Antec has a really nice one out with a 350w psu. From there pick which platform suits you better and get what fits your needs.. |

Thank you very much. I guess my question lies here:
What would you recommend as a starting point for my pc in my car. What processor, and other things that would be capable of handling a car application. What motherboard processor setup would be recommended as a start up....then I believe I could take it from there. Or should I start with a shuttle...and add the correct processor and go from there..? |

To help you though, I recommend you get a HTPC case or a Shuttle case. Pair it with any old processor, possibly a Pentium D 805 and an Asus P5L-MX with 512mb Corsair VS DDR2667 as you won't be playing games in your car, will you?

I'll take care of that right now - you have just been banned. Go find another forum to insult.
