Boot Problem

My new build is giving getting randomly stuck at boot up at the pci device screen with the cursor blinking. The only solution that works so far is to do a hard boot, resetting just brings it back to the same screen.
Ive run memtest for a few hours with no errors, Disable/disconnected the dvd drive. I thoiught since I had trouble installing the mobo chipset off the supplied cd that maybe it was at fault. Turns out the disc was no good so I ended up getting them off the asus website.

I have done all updates with the exception of a bios update, not sure what ver I have.
Also once I do get it booted up windows wants to install software for the sata hard drive, is this common? along with the "safely remove hardware" icon for the hard drive in the sys tray at the lower right corner.

The only bios settings I touched was to set up the boot seqeunce. cd 1st sata 2nd

I have the hard drive in the sata1 plug and the dvd connected to the sec_ide slot as a master

Other than that I am able to use the internet, play video/ music files with no problems. However playing BF1942 after a few minutes caused the computer to shut down with no warning, I was able restart and noted the cpu temp was at 36 c and the mobo was at 30 c. The cpu target temp is set to 72 c.

Any help would much appreciated

Any guesses as to what the potential problem could be here.

Have you tried booting into Safe Mode? If you can boot into Safe Mode easily every time then you may have a problem with one of the device drivers.

Also, what kind of background programs are you using? Which anti-virus, software firewall, etc...?

Im currantly using avg anti virus zone alarm roboform and the normal win programs
The boot problem is very random and in fact today I have had no problems getting to the main screen. I'll give safe mode booting a try.

Still cant figure out why windows is looking for software for the hard drive or why it is showing up in the sys tray as new hardware. It is showing as being installed in the device manager and working properly, though i am showing in the device manager under other devices three are unknown. Under properties i get this

1 manufacturer: unknown

location: on pci bus
The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)

To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver.

2. manufacturer: unknown

location: on radeon x1900 series

This device is not configured correctly. (Code 1)

To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver.

3.manufacturer: unknown

location: on radeon x1900 series

This device is not configured correctly. (Code 1)

To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver.

I have no clue as to what drivers I should install, everything else appears correct

code 1 states that you need to update the drivers in this case it would be for your video card.

code 28 states that the driver for this device is not installed. delete the unknown device for the pci bus and restart your pc to see if windows will reinstall the correct drivers for it.

Did you install the motherboard chipset drivers from the motherboard CD?

Did you install the video card drivers yet?

And everything looks okay in Device Manager now?

Is your computer overclocked?

Do you have another video card you can swap in to test with?

do you have any other pci cards (modems, sound cards, etc) installed in your pc. if so, did you install the drivers for them? if you remove those cards and reboot your machine, does the unknown device pci bus still show up? if not then you it is wanting drivers for a particular pci card that you pulled from the system, to narrow it down install them one at a time and boot your machine till you determine which card is needing the drivers.

No other pci cards, just the video card

On further research I found that installing aibooster takes care of that problem, therefore I have no other unknowns in the device manager
I still didnt get a good boot after hitting the reset button, only after a hard boot did it boot up.

Im still getting the "safely remove hardware" icon in the sys tray to remove the harddrive

That's normal if you have a SATA hard drive.

That's normal with SATA drives, they are hotswappable, but you don't really want to try it!
