New Computer

I intend to purchase a new computer shortly. I would welcome any suggestions. Especially where the monitor is concerned.

Do you mean you're going to buy a retail name brand computer or are you going to buy loose parts and build it yourself?

And what do you want to know about the monitor? Type? Size? Cost?

I would buy from a company called Komplett. They give a list of parts , you pick and they assemble.

As regards the monitor is there anything in particular I should be looking out for.

Do you want an older CRT (tube) type monitor or a more modern LCD?

Are you a gamer?

I would definitely go for an Lcd monitor.
Yes, I am a gamer.

Okay, please link us to the correct section of the Komplett website, and give us a budget.

If you are looking at the Komplett Intel Core 2 machine, it's not bad except for the video card. Definitly will need a stronger card for gaming and depending on the card a stronger PSU.

Then you'll want a fairly good sized LCD monitor (19" minimum) that has a low response time. I've seen LCD monitors with response times as low as 2ms. I just bought a Samsung 931B that I'm happy with but the response time is 8ms. The Samsung 931C has a response time of 2ms. I don' t play games but I figure for a gamer the 2ms model would be preferred.

Really? Maybe I shouldn't get an 8ms response time monitor, then, but Alaron or someone else (can't recall) told me that 8ms was plenty for gaming as well. Shouldn't lower your fps much at all. I know I have a sharp 15" lcd and I still get plenty of FPS (not sure of the response time, though). It probably depends more on the video card.

The response time of the LCD monitor has nothing to do with how much FPS you're getting in a game...that's all determined by the video card, RAM and CPU. A lower response time just means you'll have less chance of ghosting while playing a game.

Cricket's right. 8ms will be fine for gaming, but with all the displays on the market now that offer 2ms, may as well go with one of those if you're buying a new one.

I have an LCD monitor that has a response time of 16ms, and I haven't noticed any gaming issues. I think 16ms is the abesolute maximum, anything slower and you'll start having issues.
