Building a new rig

Ok, my budget is 1300. I need a computer that's optimised for gaming and intense video editing. I have a monitor keyboard and mouse. Anyone feel like hooking me up with a sweet setup?

If you want a budget one, you will prefer the AMD - they are slashing prices for these.

If you want to spend a little bit more, you will prefer the Intel. The Cores are very powerful and they will deliver exceptional performance.

With a budget of $1300 cantputt04 could put together a pretty potent gaming rig...this is not a budget/low cost build.

ASUS P5B - $145
Intel E6600 - $315
Corsair ValueSelect 2x1GB DDR2-667 - $215
FSP Group AX500 (500W) - $90
ATI X1900XT - $270
Seagate 7200.10 250GB - $80 (or a larger one if you need it)
LITE-ON DVD-RW - $30
Win XP Home OEM - $90
Case of your choice...

That's about $1235 + case + shipping (and tax if applicable). You could always cut back to a E6300 if you need to cut costs further...
(These are newegg.com prices)

Well it's for my brother... He does a lot of intense video editing which is the main reason I can here... I mean I know that MY computer could handle some sweet video editing, but I don't really know much about it... Like, would the hardware differ in any way, whether it be for gaming of video editing...

And AMD of Intel, doesn't really matter too much, I just want the best bang for buck kind of deal...

Yes, gaming requires a stronger video card than video editing. Blue's list is suitable for both.

Hmmm indeed... He just came to me saying he doesn't really need the best of the best... He just really needs a computer that can handle what he throws at it. I told him he can have something still awesome for under a grand... He said hook him up with what he needs, with some luxury... So maybe that build isn't really what we're looking for after all...

The search is now something that will handle what he needs (editing and gaming) effectively at a reasonable price... So basically it's a budget PC now...

Okay...but blue60007's recommendations are still good, we just have to adjust some of the selections to meet the new under $1000 budget.

ASUS P5B is still a good choice - $145

Instead of the E6600 C2D, the E6300 C2D would be a good choice - $182

1 GB of RAM for now and 1 GB of RAM later if needed. 1GB Corsair XMS DDR2 800 - $132

A 450 watt Fortron Source PSU instead of a 500 watt unit - $49

A moderate video card (can't really suggest one since I'm not a gamer and don't follow the video card market) - $150?

The 250GB Seagate is still a good choice - $80

The Lite-On DVD burner is still a good choice - $30

With these simple changes I think you reduce the total cost by almost $380 and bring the new total to under $900.

To top that off, this looks like a pretty good mid-range card:

You can cut the motherboard back to an Asus P5LD2 version 2.0 or even a P5L-MX and cut the ram back to Corsair Value Select DDR2-667 to save more. That will allow you to go stronger on the video card for gaming. You can get an Antec Sonata II case for $100, it comes with a good 450w PSU. If it's intense video editing, see if you can squeeze 2gb of ram in.

Antec Sonata II is $59.99 after mail-in-rebate. Great buy.

NICE find - but the rebate is only good till 10/31, buy it NOW. It's also only good if bought from Newegg.
