first i'd like to apologize to acemasta for jumping his thread, i can get a little excited sometimes.
Here are my current thoughts: CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Conroe 2.4GHz http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115003 MOBO: ASUS P5B http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131030 MEM: CORSAIR ValueSelect 2GB (2 x 1GB) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145098 HD: Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250GB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148144 VIDEO: 3D Fuzion 3DFR66256X GeForce 6600 256MB 128-bit DDR PCI Express x16 http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16814143068 PSU: ENERMAX Whisper II 460w http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817103464 CASE: LIAN LI PC-61 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811112025 DVD-RW: LITE-ON http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16827106017 Here are my reasons: At some point, I might like to add some beefy audio cards, or firewire type interfaces for a home studio recording setup. That's mainly why I'm leaning towards the larger processor. I decided on a fairly mild video card because I don't really do any gaming and the only video processing I might do will only involve my Sony Cyber shot, so nothing huge. And the case looks like I'd have to start a fire in it in order to heat anything up. I'll probably have to make dust filters for it. I guess the one thing that's sort of bugging me is newegg.com . Is there any reason why everything is referenced to it? Ii looks cool, it seems the prices are mostly reasonable, blah, blah, is it just everyone's new favorite? Or can I still do it old skool and goto pricewatch and price out the now $1000.93 PC (w/o shipping) to about $850? btw- the wife and I camped out at Hanging Rock, NC this weekend. The colors were unreal! Thanks, MikeD |

Nice build BTW.. newegg.com is one of the more reliable places to buy anything. I have bought from them for the last 5yrs and have absolutely no problems with the quality of their products.. Personally I'm not into buying from multiple places just to save a penny or two.. Sometimes if newegg doesnt have a part in stock, I just go to the local PC store and get it there... I think everything is referenced to help you get the best product and info they buyer needs....

True. I suppose it's nice to get one package instead hoping all 7 or 8 of them arrive in some timely manner, if at all.
OH, I've got another question about the DVD RW. I see there are a couple of the lite-on's that differ in price, by about $10. I think I'm missing something... I can't really tell the difference. too many numbers and letters! What's the difference? |

1. For videocard get the X1300 instead.
2. You can get just as good of a quality powersupply for less that will more then power your setup. I would rather choose one of these: FSP AX450W $48.99 Or Enhance 400w $57.68

I'm trying to figure out how much power I might need for a garage studio system. Does anyone have any good site suggestions I might go for answers? My ultimate goal would be to have a functional 8 - 16 track, record at once system, with appropriate software (will software affect power supply?).

No, the biggest effect on a power supply is the video card. You don't have or need a high end card, so you don't need a ton of power, just quality power.
Not only is Newegg consistent and reliable, their website is unmatched for being able to research components. When I go to other sites to find components, I get frustrated. |

Thanks for all the advice so far. I think I will go with newegg. Their prices are pretty competitive and they have it all in stock.
I'll go with the little cheaper PSU and the ATI x1300 video card. The total now (w/o shipping) is $997. nice. I could easily knock off another $50 and get a cheaper case, but I like this one. Now I have to save up for a flat screen. I now have a big 'ol Sony Trinitron form an old dell. Nice picture, but what a freakin' mammoth. Thanks again. I'll let you all know how thw build went. |

success! What a screamer. the Lian Li case made putting it all together a breeze. With all those fans, I hope it doesn't take off flying somewhere.
Thanks for your help! Mike |
