new build - thinking about switching GPU's and MOBO
Alright So I was about to buy all the components last night and now I'm considering switching to NVIDIA instead of ATI because I can't seem to find the x1900xt at a reasonable price at Newegg. I would like to buy all my stuff from there if possible. Is that a ridiculous idea? I don't know much about this being it's my first build and everybody seems to say stick to newegg.
So what is NVIDIA's equivelant of the x1900xt? and what MOBO should I pair with it? I believe eerything else can be the same. RAM = corsair XMS HDD = seagate SATA 320 GB PSU = http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817153039 monitor = ACER 22 inch widescreen. Any other comments and advice is appreciated. Thanks guys |

I buy everything from Newegg, as do many members here. Top notch prices and service, why bother going anywhere else?
For the motherboard, take a look at the Asus P5B or P5W DH. The Nvidia equivalent of the x1900xt is arguable, but probably the 7900series. |

How much are you looking to spend on the video card? I don't know what your idea of a resonable price is...I saw one for $270 just a minute ago.

ASUS EAX1900 CrossFire /2DH/512M 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card - Retail
is this a good card to start with? Then go X fire if necessary? It's the only x 1900 that I can find at newegg right now that is 512 mb. |

blue that sounds great to me... was it 512 mb or 256?
I'm not even sure how much of a difference it makes but most recommended a 512 sonce I'm gonna run just the single till I get a better knowledge of what the hell I'm doing... |

The Asus X1900XT with 256mb is $269.99 at Newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814121029
I wouldn't limit yourself to 512mb cards, the 256 will play anything out there. Do you have a link to the Acer and Samsung? Both make good monitors. |

yeah here's the ACER...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824009094 Samsung... here's one of them http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824001081 it seems like I'd like to have the extra inches but I really don't know much about this despite all the reading I've done. So the 256 can play anything? Everybody seemed to say stick to the 512 but again I don't really know that much about it. All in I just want a nice solid comp that can play games and do graphic work and I'd liek to do it all for 2 grand. |

I doubt 256MB vs 512MB difference is that large unless you going to be playing at extreme resolutions (ie, 2560 res). If I'm not mistaken, all the other specs are identical (ie, clock speeds). Even then, I can't imagine the difference would be huge.
EDIT: found something: http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2821&p=4 The X1900XT, either 256 or 512, should handle pretty much game out there very well. If you want to compare the X1900XT to nVidia equivalents, here's Tom's interactive charts: http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics.html Last edited by blue60007; 10-23-2006 at 03:29 PM. |
