New Build... computer starts, shows running on screen and then shuts off......

Just powered on my computer for the first time (no OS)... and it turns on fine, no beeps from bios, shows bios on screen but after about 20 seconds the power cuts off... no beep, no warning just dies... after many tries it keeps on doing this... sometimes its on for 20 sec sometimes less...

Any advice?

Full specs, please.

Almost sounds like you have a socket 775 build with a heatsink that's not properly installed.

Remove the motherboard from the case and reinstall the heatsink. The 4 pins must snap completely into the holes in the motherboard then they must be locked down with a 1/4 turn.

Same issue

I'm getting simular results. Here is my system:

Asus P5n32-SLI LGA 775
CoolMax CW-650T 650 W ATX v2.01
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Conroe 2.4GHz
Corsair XMS2 2 x 1GB DDR2
BFG Tech GeForce 7600GT (to be upgraded to 2 boards later on)
Wester Digital 250GB SATA HDD
Cooler Master Mystique Case
Samsung 225BW 22" LCD monitor

Put the CPU memory and grphics card on the mobo, then put the ps in the case, hooked up the power cords, pluged in the HDD, hooked up the monitor and power.

Hit the power button; all fans humming, no beep, keyboard lights flash, can sometimes get POST screen and even get into BIOS. But uslualy everything shuts down before then.

From searches and this thread it sounds like I may have a short to the case or need to reseat my heatsink. I'll try pulling everything when I get home from work. I'll post my results!

Is there anything else that seems to stick out that I've missed?

Thanks!
WB

Over one hurdle....

I think it was the heatsink (thanks guys! ) I took out the motherboard, took it out, put it back ..... now the computer does not shut itself off!

Unfortunatly, nothing is showing on the moniter (no signal is detected).... I think it is the video card as yesterday in my brief periods of seeing the bios, it was either small, fuzzy, or red... Do you think its my video card or something else?

It was probably a shortage somewhere.

As for the no signal problem, could it perhaps be your monitor? If not, I'd try a different video card or just return it.

If the motherboard in or out of the case right now?

Is the video card inserted fully into the PCI-Express 16 slot?

Does the video card require a separate power cable and if so, do you have it connected?

Geminiwb, please start your own thread instaed of jumping into someone else's. We are pretty insistent on that here so people can get the help they need without digging through a bunch of other posts. Thank you.

Okay...if you know the monitor is working properly then you probably have a defective video card. Try another video card if you have access to one.

If the problem remains even with a different video card then you may have a defective motherboard.

Hey! Exchanged the video card today... same problem.... the computer does not die anymore and all the fans are powering up .... could it be the motherboard? Anyway to check this? I would think it is considering all the fans from the motherboards are working. Any beeps im suppose to hear?

Are you still using the CoolMax power supply? It's not a very good quality unit. I'd try another compatible power supply just to rule that out. In fact, I'd replace the CoolMax just on principle...it's rubbish.

Oh, sorry...I was looking at Geminiwb's specs. But you should never assume the power supply is working properly in this kind of situation...I always swap in a known-to-be-good power supply just to rule out a power problem.

Did you connect the CPU heatsink fan power connector to the motherboard?

Are you sure the LGA775 heatsink is installed correctly?
