New build not powering up
I just assembled a new computer. The specs are as follows: Asus A8N32_SLI, OCZ 700W GXSSLI PSU, AMD 939 3500 Winchester CPU, stock AMD HSF made for AMD FX-57, WD 500 gig HD, 2x1gig Crucial DDR PC 3200 DDR400 RAM, e-VGA 6800 Ultra graphics card.
I turned on the power and nothing. I then removed the motherboard from the case, connected all the power connectors to the mobo outside the case and still nothing. I disconnected the PSU from everything and ran a jumper from the green test wire on the main power to the mobo to an adjacent ground. The PSU powered up and the voltages for 3v, 5v and 12v are all to specification according to my multimeter. I also removed the graphics card before testing the mobo outside the case but left the RAM in the sockets and left the CPU and HSF in place as well. I then connected all the power cables (the 20x4 main power, the 4 pin square and the molex connector) turned on the PSU and there is no voltage on any of the 3, 5 or 12 volt connectors. The green LED on the board comes on though. Of course with no voltage, the CPU fan does not turn. For some reason, the PSU does not power up when connected to the mobo but powers up fine when it is jumped. What might be the problem? Thanks

Well, its down to bad ram, cpu, or motherboard. Pull the ram next - the board should still start with no ram or video card.

I pulled the RAM and tried a different PSU. The results are that the PSU still does not power on.
Will a motherboard allow the PSU to power on if the CPU is not in the socket? |

Gee, it's starting to look like the motherboard went bad.
I've never tried to power a motherboard up without a CPU...guess you could try and see what happens. Cricket

No, it will not power up at all without a CPU.
