New Build, No Start Up

Hey All. This seems to be a commen problem, but I haven't yet seen a real solution. So here goes:

Everything is ready to go; psu installed, mobo in place, cpu installed with hs, ram well seated, graphics card in, hdd hooked up, cd drive hooked up, everything has power, all fans hooked up. Flip the switch - all fans come to life, hdd spins up, light flickers on cd drive, monitor flickers - POST screen showes up - - - everything shuts down. huh...

this happens a few times, I come here and do some research and find that I should try running the board out of the case and re-reat the cpu, ram and graphis card. I do all that...

nothing really changes except that now I can get into the bios before it shuts down. I build myself a new rig about every 3-4 years, so I'm not really a novic, but I'm not pro for sure. I've never seen anything like this. Usually it works or it doesn't...

Here is system info:

Asus P5n32-SLI LGA 775
CoolMax CW-650T 650 W ATX v2.01
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Conroe 2.4GHz
Corsair XMS2 2 x 1GB DDR2
BFG Tech GeForce 7600GT (to be upgraded to 2 boards later on)
Wester Digital 250GB SATA HDD
Cooler Master Mystique Case
Samsung 225BW 22" LCD monitor

Let me know what you think. Any input welcome!!

Are you sure the LGA775 heatsink is installed correctly? It can be difficult to install. Here's a good installation guide.

Do you have another compatible power supply you can swap in to test with?

Cricket, no I'm not sure I have the hs installed corectly. That thing is a pain to install. I'll read the

I do not have a campatible power supply to test with. If I can't get this going tonight, I'll go pick up an Antec. I've had good luck with them.

I'll give installing the HS one more time.....

Much force is required. Just don't go crazy.

Make sure you heard the pins on the heatsink "snap" in (you'll hear it). Also, that link Cricket posted has a picture of what the pins should look like from the back side.

This may be a stupid question, but would the cpu shut everything down like that? sometimes is only take a secxond or let and it shuts down?

Anyway... I looked at the walk through and my pins look similar, but not exactly. the black pins are not quite flush with the white clips. I'll try to get them all way down.

OK, got the heat sink pins al the way down and locked (thumbs hurt). No change in behavior. Can occationaly get to bios, bios acts normal if i get there (sees drives attached, correct cpu, etc). If I don't hit the DEL button it sometimes goes successfully through POST and askes for a bootable source....

Thinking its the power suply, but am not sure........

Can you keep it running long enough to get into the bios to monitor the CPU temperature?

No, glc, if I get to the bios it only lasts long enough to see it then it then it shuts down. I have felt the back of the mobo to see if it is really hot, but it is not. The heatsink does warm a small amount, so I think all is working there.

I'm going to pick up a new psu today and see if that works; either an antec or seasonic.

Thank you glc, blue60007,cricket, newbuilder14!!
