How Can I Insulate My Motherboard?
I have a xouple questions. Can i power on my pc even if not everything is installed? I.E - I dont have the RAM in yet. And my second question is this, I think my motherboard might be shorting out on my case. I havent tried it out of the case yet so im not sure. Is there any way to protect the back of the mobo from the case? Like a pice of paper? Also, what kinda screws do i need to use to screw it in, and do i need to put the washers around them.
Any help is greatly appreciated. BTW this is my first time building a PC |

Your case should have come with motherboard standoffs, brass screws that heighten the motherboard above the metal.

Yep, no problem:
Do this first: http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=132409 Then try to estimate where the standoffs go - to be honest I was a newb and use a measuring tape and you can do that too. Then just place the motherboard over the standoffs, through the holes on the motherboard, and screw it in. Be gentle, I was a little tight once and it is not fun. Good luck and come back with any more questions. |

I wonder if most of the problems people are having with computer builds when they are having issues with shorting or whatever is caused because they aren't properly using the motherboard standoffs? I have built my own computers since 1993 and have never had the problems people seem to be having.

This sort of thing is where the phrase RTFM usually comes in I think. Now I don't think anyone here really minds anwsering these kinds of questions to help out, but an extra 5 minutes of double checking the docs would go along way to cutting down on these threads.

I've yet to see a case that comes with motherboard mounting instructions - if you are lucky it may come with a parts list. Maybe some motherboard manuals address this, but I've yet to see it.
Yes, you can power it on without ram, but it won't prove anything, you will not get any display at all and if you have the speaker hooked up it's just gonna beep like crazy at you. |

Thank you for all your help guys. Sorry if I was a bit newbie. I put everything I need together, (no floppy drive yet). Everything runs ok and no weird sounds. Except, now Im getting an error when i try to install windows xp. I get past the partition and it goes to the light blue windows background. It has a list on the left of about 6 steps. It is in the step of "installing windows". And it comes up with an error saying that the file (i forgot its name) is missing. Any tips on what to do next? Thanks.

Are you using a legal copy of Windows XP?

Soccerman1181, if it is "NTLDR is missing", just reinstall XP with a quick format. The same thing happened to me. I do not have an reason or a why the error occurs or why reinstalling worked, but it did. Give it a try.
