ISA slots needed!
I’m thinking about building a PC at work that needs at least 3 ISA slots. Why, you might ask, because it would be cheaper than replacing the ISA cards. The old system is reeeallllly old. It won’t support XP and we can’t get any of the WiFi cards to work on it. Here’s the build I came up with through ewiz.com . It totals out to about $277 + S&H ~ $300. We already have a CD-RW and I might be able to reuse the hard drives, so that could knock another $40 off. We have a site licenses for XP, so the OS is no biggy.
The mother board says it can take up to 1 gig of RAM, but buying Ram always freaks me out a little. Does that mean I can stick two 512’s in it? Here’s the spec’s from the manufacturer’s site: · Supports up to 1GB using VCM (Virtual Channel Memory) or PC SDRAM DIMM (unbuffered or registered) · Two 168-pin DIMM sockets · Uses x64 PC SDRAM, 3.3V - PC-100 SDRAM DIMM for 100MHz FSB processors - PC-133 SDRAM DIMM for 133MHz FSB processors Is the RAM I selected compatible? Can I put two 512’s in instead of the two 256’s? Or one 512 and one 256? And, finally, I’m pretty sure the case I selected sucks ass. Ewiz dosen’t have a very good selection process for cases. Does anyone know of a discount case that I should use instead? I figured I could get a better deal on a PSU/case combo. I plan on using the on-board video and no speakers, so power draw should be a minimum. I figured this might be fun for some of you to look at, so I posted it here. If, for some reason, posting work related tasks on this site is a bad thing, I’m sorry. And if it’s conditional, then I work for the USDA, so I’m a civil servant. I'm trying to extend your tax dollars! the build: DFI CM64-AL Socket 370/PLE133T/PC133/A&V&L/MATX Motherboard ($70.56) http://www.ewiz.com/detail.php?name=MB-CM64-AL# Website for the motherboard manufacturer: http://us.dfi.com.tw/Product/xx_prod...YPE=MB&SITE=NA Intel Pentium III 1GHz 133MHz 256K FCPGA 1.75V CPU, Retail (41.20) http://www.ewiz.com/detail.php?name=P_1000PGBX# I’m not too sure the chip comes with a heat sink, so… Vantec Socket 370/A TMD CPU Fan ($17.51) http://www.ewiz.com/detail.php?name=FAN-VA7040# Kingston KVR133X64C3/256 PC133 256M/32x64 Original Memory ($32.96 X 2) http://www.ewiz.com/detail.php?name=PC133256KI Western Digital WD800BB 80GB ATA100 7200rpm 8MB Hard Drive ($44.29) http://www.ewiz.com/detail.php?name=HD-D800BB Raidmax Diamond 228SP 350W PC Case (Silver) ($28.48) http://www.ewiz.com/detail.php?name=CA-R228S intake and exhaust fans ($4.63 & $4.74) http://www.ewiz.com/detail.php?name=CA-AF12025 http://www.ewiz.com/detail.php?name=CA-ACF8 |

Building em is fun and all that, but you'll end up with a New\Old n slow machine.
For pretty much the same money: Dimension E521 AMD Sempron™ 3400+ Genuine Windows® XP Home Edition NVIDIA GeForce 6150 LE Integrated Graphics GPU 512MB Single Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz - 1DIMM 48X CD-RW/ DVD Combo Drive $329.00 AMD Athlon™ 64 3200+ [add $20 or $1/month1]

Hmm... you might find these board, a used processor and some other old stuff in the Auction sites or ask around for computers which are built during year '99 - 2001. Buying old parts from a retail store is very expensive, and with that cost you could have bought a new set of computer.
Uh... just curious, what ISA cards are you still currently using?

That's about the only motherboard in town any more with 3 ISA slots without going out into the used market. Newegg has it for a couple bucks less than Ewiz. Get the processor from Ewiz, that's a retail box which means it comes with a heatsink and you aren't going to find anything better anywhere else for that price.
Here's my suggestions for alternate components for the rest of the build from Newegg, selected with quality in mind without unnecessary expense: If you want 1 gig of ram: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820153101 (2) If you only need 512, get 1 module. Leave the other slot open for a future upgrade. Hard drive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148095 If the old system is a dinosaur, treat yourself to a new fresh hard drive. Case: (Note that most cheap cases that come with power supplies use L&C power supplies which are total garbage - this case was selected with PSU quality in mind) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811153042 300 watts, Fortron power supply. Stock cooling is adequate, no additional fans needed. I've built quite a few basic systems with this case. It's very well constructed and sturdy too - unlike most cheap cases. It has a 20+4 pin main ATX connector - the extra 4 pin block snaps off leaving you with 20 pins which is what you need. Ezy, that Dell does not have any ISA slots. The OP has a specific requirement here and there really is no viable alternative to what's proposed. However, I do have one question for the OP - are your ISA cards supported in XP? If not, if your site license is for XP Pro, you can legally downgrade to Windows 2000 Pro on that license if you have to if the cards are supported in 2000. If I'm not mistaken, WinXP doesn't provide support for legacy ISA devices right?

This is the board we just replaced. I'm not too sure what the other two boards are. I believe one of them is a relay controller. This board cost over $600 to replace, so you can see why we don't want to get rid of it. We didn't have time to find an upgrade when it died because it died in the middle of an experiment. When it does that, you really can only replace it fast as you can so you loose as little data as possible.
http://www.measurementcomputing.com/...ALENQ16N55BWW8 We use a VB program to control the boards, so there shouldn't be an XP conflict. I read some of the spec's on the board and I didn't see any thing that said there was a conflict. Thanks for your suggestions and comments. I going to go through the links and revise my price list. -Mike |

Looks good - how much is shipping on the motherboard at Ewiz as compared to Newegg?

At newegg it's about $6 for shipping for the board. They don't carry the processor. I might save $1 ordering the board from eWiz, that's including the $1 extra the board costs at eWiz.
