Not a bad start. I would switch the CPU for the Core 2 Duo e6300. Just a bit more expensive and the C2D's are the best chips on the market right now. And to use that chip, switch the motherboard for the Asus P5B.
I'd switch the hard drive for one with a 16mb cache if you can. I would also switch to a Lite-On burner, they come with software. |

Hey, for that video card, you might want to do what the person reviewing said and get the GT model instead of the GS model. He said that it isn't that much more.

It's the old pay now or pay later bit.
If you can afford a bit more for a better set up that should last a year or two longer, then it's def worth it. benchmarks: http://www.intel.com/performance/des...home/index.htm |

The 1.83 Ghz C2D would be better than the 3.0 Ghz Pentium D, despite the lower Ghz rating. I would definitely go for it since it is only $25 more, and that can probably be shaved off if needed.
Suggested part list (trying to keep at same budget as before) Motherboard: ASUS P5L-MX Socket T (LGA 775) Intel 945G Micro ATX Intel Motherboard (this is the cheapest board from a reputable brand that will run a C2D) OR (if you want more features and full ATX): Foxconn P9657AA-8KS2H Socket T (LGA 775) Intel P965 Express ATX Intel Motherboard (that is about the cheapest 965 chipset board from a reputible brand)(be sure to get a power supply with a 8 pin aux connector if you get this board) Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 Conroe 1.86GHz 2M sharing L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor Video Card: Go for a GDDR3 memory version like this: eVGA 256-P2-N612-TX GeForce 7600 GTS 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card OR you could get the GT version eVGA 256-P2-N615-TX GeForce 7600GT 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar RE WD1600YS 160GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive OR Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 (Perpendicular Recording) ST3250620AS 250GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive (the Seagate 7200.10's have been recommended alot lately, although I haven't used one myself) Ram: Get two 512MB sticks so that you can run dual channel mode (somewhat of a preformance boost)(unless you are planning to add another GB within a few months) CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB (2 x 512MB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Desktop Memory (Corsair is a great company, and it is on sale so that it is cheaper than your choice) CD/DVD: Your NEC would be fine, but a liteon comes with Nero and PowerDVD LITE-ON Black 16X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 8X DVD+R DL 16X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 24X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2M Cache ATAPI/E-IDE 16X DVD Burner(it is also on sale, so that it is $2 cheaper than your NEC, and it comes with software)(I guess if you burn DVD's often, the NEC's 18x might be worth it to you) PSU: Not too sure about Nvidia Power requirements. The XClio 450BL is a good deal, but if that will power a 7600, I am not sure. OS: Microsoft Windows XP Home With SP2B 1 Pack That all comes out to $703 before case and shipping (that is calculated using the lower price components where there are two listed). I am not sure if the 450BL will power your setup, someone else will have to check into it. Your other choices (including WinXP Home and a Xclio 450BL for the sake of making it come out right) is $676. That is $27 more for a C2D, a better video card, and a better HD. Personally, I think that is worth it to go with the newest chip, b/c it will last longer than a Pentium D. Whatever you decide, enjoy your build!

The 450BL will power anything except a very high end card.

Any reasonably sized case you like should be fine. It's the power supply that's important. Stock cooling is fine unless the case has NO fans, you need at least one rear exhaust fan.

I have a few suggestions. Asus is higher quality then GigaByte, I'd go with the Asus P5L-MX for a top quality budget board: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131041
The Apevia case is fine, but that power supply isn't good. Switch it with this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817104954 The 6600 is starting to show its age as a gaming card. I'd switch it to this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814131007
