Ok, just build a computer and got it all working and when I turn it on for first time it shows the cpu, memory, harddrives, and this error: CMOS checksum error. Also according to the beeps its 1 long beep and 3 short beeps and bios is phoenix award ver 6 and it says display cpu type and memory. I even cleared out the cmos and put fresh battery in and problem persists. I took out video card, still problem and it does the beeps with the video card out. So is this more likely the mother board or video card? Motherboard is ASUS A8N-SLI and video card is chaintech 6600LE pci express 16. I don't have any parts laying around, whats best way to do this? Go to computer store and get another video card of diff brand and plug it in and see if thats the problem?

That sounds like a video card issue. You NEED a video card in there for the computer to Post. At least the On board video. If your computer has Onboard video, start with that. You may need to reset the bios before turning it on. Look in your book to see which jumper resets the board. I know that they like to use J50, but just be sure.

The motherboard does not have onboard video. I'm hoping its the video card and not motherboard because its easier to replace the card rather than taking out the whole system and redoing the cpu, etc.

Well, from what you said about the Long Beep and three little beeps after that, I have heard that many many times and it is the video morse code error.

Ok, just got a new video card and installed it. Still giving me the same error and it only beeps like that if I don't have video card in. So I turned on the machine and it goes to POST and the keyboard lights do not come on and I can not press DEL key to go to BIOS setup since keyboard will not work and I tried 3 keyboards. The memory I have installed is the 2 x 1gig GSkill DDR 400 with heatspreaders. I have one ddr 266 memory laying around....would that work with the motherboard for testing? I'm gonna list the components I have just in case anyone is wondering. Also my friend let me borrow his POST probe card thing and according to the number and bios it means "Display CPU type and speed" whatever that means. On the monitor it shows the cpu, memory is ok, hard drives, etc and CMOS checksum error - default.

Ok, just removed the memory I had and installed DDR 266 and still having same problem. Computer boots up but still no keyboard lights and same error message. I'm thinking its the motherboard. Anything else I should try?

By the way I have only 1 pci express card installed since this is just a basic system. Even though I have 24 pin power connector installed and 4 pin connector installed, would I still need to plug in the 4 pin EZ power connector from power supply to motherboard where it says EZ pin even though I only have 1 video card? Also this card doesn't have anywhere where you can plug 4 pin into like some very high end cards do.

Ok, I took everything out of the case and properly grounded myself. I placed the motherboard on the cardboard box it came in. Re installed the cpu, cleaned it, reapply thermal grease, installed heatsink and plug in cpu power, 1 memory module, video card, plug power supply 24 pin and 4 pin, connected the keyboard and monitor only, turned on the mobo with small screwdriver and powers up......but still getting the same darn error on the monitor during POST. I even swapped memory, tried diff slots, put in the diff video card I borrowed from another computer with pci express system and still getting same error. You guys think it may be the motherboard since only the green power light comes on when you turn it on and none of the lights on ethernet port or keyboard lights do not come on and keyboard does nothing when you press keys during POST so I can get into BIOS setup?AGGHHHH!!!!!!

Ok, just contacted Newegg for RMA on this board. Thanks for the help guys. I did learn one thing though.....to always test it outside of the case first before I waste all my time installing in case and tiding up the cables, etc.
