New rig, how does it look? First SLI/Intel setup...

I'm going to be getting this new rig in spring, before I move out. I was wondering how this looks, this will be my first SLI rig, and first Intel rig. Is this a good Gaming PC, as the Motherboard and CPU goes? That will be its main use, along with college school work, and other regular things like Internet, chatting, music, etc...just wondering if this all is compatible together.

Motherboard- ASUS P5N32-SLI Premium/WiFi-AP Socket T (LGA 775) NVIDIA nForce 590 SLI ATX Intel

CPU- Intel Pentium Extreme Edition 965 Presler 3.73GHz LGA 775 Processor

CASE- LIAN LI V Silver Aluminum ATX Full Tower

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811112054

MONITOR- NEC Display Solutions Silver 17" 8ms LCD

MOUSE/KEY- Microsoft Silver USB RF Wireless Ergonomics Wireless Laser Desktop 6000 Mouse Included

I think that makes everything. As you can see, I'm building from scratch once again. Thanks for all your help.

All that for a 17" monitor...hmm
Also go Core Duo: 6600 is nice. (or go with the x6800 if your willing to spend that much). Presler get owned: http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu.ht...=434&chart=170
And you DON'T need that power supply.

The x6800 is less than the CPU I have up now... Why wouldn't I be willing to spend less? What does mine have over that one?

What PSU do you reccommend?

Im gonna tell you right now, no such thing as sli and intel. If you really want it that bad, wait for
nforce 680i chipsets to release.

Yours has nothing over that one. Well it is hotter...literally (hehe...thats a bad thing).

For a PSU look at the thermaltake SLI ones. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817153039

Alright, why? So should I just make the change on my RAM (DDR2 800 not 600), MOBO, and CPU over to a AMD then? How does this look?

MOBO- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131011

CPU- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819105019

RAM- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145034

Alright, and this PSU- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817153036

Now will that CPU work with that MOBO?

Alright, I will go with that PSU. Any reason why AMD is better for SLI than Intel though?

Cough Cough...and CPU...its MUCH BETTER!!!!

I believe it is just becuase the chipsets or more compatible, or something like that. All i know is that AMD and SLI work better than Intel and SLI.
Personally I went with Intel and ATI Crossfire (I dont have the second x1950xtx card yet though...)

EDIT: Sry, didn't realize, you did change the CPU, NICE! I was typing this while you posted the new specs post.

1. Wow, well overall that is a better choice if you want true sli. Just want to say one thing though...The new nforce chipsets for intel should be out in early to mid november. Not trying to discourage or delay you, but that is a WHOLE lotta money being put at stake. Your choice. Core 2 Duo will demolish anything and everything.

2. Yes I do agree on going with the FX-62, Opteron is usually picked for extreme overclocking purposes.

3. Hm seeing as your spending so much already...why not use that money saved on the processor to get this motherboard:
ASUS AM2 Crosshair.

And great choice on the ram.

4. Now on the psu. Dont be misunderstood. That is one heck of a powersupply. One of the most beefiest units available. BUT, there is better for LESS. Thermaltake is ok, but seeing as your budget is just a bit wider . I suggest this powersupply:

Silverstone ST75ZF $209.99

5. Intel and Sli is currently very unstable. There are boards for it, but your in for a ride (bad sense) if you do go that route. Like I said if you truely want intel and sli, wait for the new chipsets.

And...two more things....
again, 17" monitor??? Why???
Also, are you sure you need that sound card. Compare it too the X-Fi Platinum, I think you will see that you don't really need the Elite.

Yeah, I was going to go with ATI Crossfire, but decided to go with SLI personally. So that looks like a pretty good rig then? You think it will last me awhile as for gaming, and all that goes? I know the AM2 is the newest socket type out by AMD correct? How is that CPU though, is it in the top of the league, or will AMD come out with one even better in the coming months (like I said, this will be a spring time build, right before I head off to college).

The monitor, well, the price, brand, and 17" is fine for me. Think I should go with something bigger? I was going to get the Crossfire MOBO, but isn't it for Crossfire (ATI) or no?

Well, I will check back in the Spring for new chipsets, motherboards, etc...just trying to get a baseline of what I will be getting. My limit is about $4,000 give or take $100. (With Monitor, Keyboard, OS, etc...)

My cart, with the above posted items, is $3,550

Um..if your building in a few months, why not go with the most performance and Core 2 Duo (Or Core 2 QUAD) with a Intel 680i nforce motherboard?

Everything is gonna be the same except for processor and motherboard..

One more thing. If your going to go with ANY high power dual card setup. You need atleast a 24'' monitor or above to use the high resolutions. Otherwise your gonna see better performance with a single card. I would personally go with a decent 20-24'' monitor and a top of the line single card. (maybe DX10?)

Springtime is a long time away when it comes to Computer Technology. Aside from that, you will probably want to go with the 8800 Geforce cards or whatever is the highest number at that time anyway since they are obviously way more powerful than the 7950. I believe that I read on one of these message boards that each card will take 4 Molex connections. Another thing is that by that time AMD will also have Quad Cores out.

That's the best move. It's a waste of time planning a build 6 months down the road now.
