New Build, Need help

I built my first computer 4 years ago with the help of this site. Well, it's time for a new computer and I want to build this one as well. I just spent 2 hours reading post and I'm more confused than when I started.

From what I'm reading it seems I want to go with the Intel c2d. My budget is between $900-$1000. I want something that can play current games. Please advice me what parts to get where everything is compatible. I need everything except keyboard, ,mouse, and monitor.

Thanks for any and all advice.

When you say games you mean, Americas Army, BF2, CS:S, Fear? Right?
Is is it just light gaming?

Yeah, light gaming. I play any new star wars game that comes out. I play guild wars, and thinking about starting wow.

I'll buy the parts from newegg. That's where I got the parts for my last build.

good choice

well here we go...

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 Conroe 2.13GHz 2M sharing L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor = $220.00

Motherboard: ASUS P5N32-SLI SE Deluxe Socket T (LGA 775) NVIDIA nForce4 SLI X16 ATX Intel Motherboard = $206.99

Memory: CORSAIR ValueSelect 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) System Memory = $209.99

Optical Drive 1: LITE-ON Black 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-ROM ATAPI/E-IDE DVD-ROM Drive Model SHD-16P1S = $17.99

Optical Drive 2: LITE-ON Black 16X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 8X DVD+R DL 16X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 5X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 24X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2M Cache ATAPI/E-IDE DVD Burner W/ LightScribe = $32.99

Power Supply: Antec SmartPower 2.0 SP-500 ATX12V 500W Power Supply 115/230 V TUV, UL, CUL, CE, CB, FCC = $72.99

Video Card: eVGA 256-P2-N615-TX GeForce 7600GT 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card = $139.99

you MAY need more then this card can give, you should be good tho.

what kind of storage capacity do you need?

a case is a personal thing, i would reccomend picking that yourself but i will give reccomendations of what i like if you want

do you need speakers? if yes, would you like just basic right/left speakers or sourround sound speaks?

total so far is $900.94 ( not including shipping), if this goes over budget when we add in the hard drive and the case and speakers, then the easiest thing to downgrade will be the motherboard 2 save money

Yes I do need a hard drive. I'm thinking 250 GB. As far as a case goes the cheapest thing that works. I could care less the way the computer looks, just how it performs. I already have speakers.

Thanks for the advice keep it coming!!!

*** new total with hard drive is $980.93 (without shipping) i understand this is going to break the budget prolly when u add the case and shipping but i was asssuming 1000 was a rough estimate. if you CANT go a little over 1000 then i can change the mobo

if your not worried about the astetics of the case at all, then just pick anything really. i would reccomend black though becase the drives are black.

jer's list is good. You can easily trim some money off by going with the e6300 for $180 and the Asus P5B for $140. Even more if you went with 1GB of ram, but I would stick with 2 if you can.

Is there a huge difference between the e6300 and the e6400 (to be honest I have no idea what these numbers mean?) This system is for light gaming, but I do want it to last 4-5 years.

Jer's list is good except when it comes to the motherboard. Don't consider SLI with Intel - there are just way too many instability issues. I'd go with a cheaper, better Asus P5B.

No reason to get the E6400. If you can't afford the E6600, stick with the E6300. Get the plain P5B and take the savings and get Corsair XMS2 DDR2-800 ram.

If you really don't care what the case looks like...check this out: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811212028
LOL...only problem is that it will most likely colapse and crush all of your components.

Heres a decent case, for a decent price: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811144076
It also doesn't look that bad eithter, and I think the PSU might just hold up...and you wont need to buy one.
