Unhappy Computer freezes at BIOS POST

HELP! I just installed a new Maxtor Diamondmax 21 HD. I installed it, went into my BIOS, and saw it was configured properly. I went to create a dual boot system. I put my Windows XP disk in the CD-ROM, got to the install screen, chose the new, unpartitioned drive and everything seemed to be going well. At the first restart my system froze at the boot screen. I had to restart my computer to get the POST data. The last few lines read:

Pri Master: Maxtor 6Y120L0 YAR41BW0
Ultra DMA Mode-6, S.M.A.R.T. Capable and Status OK

This is my old HD. My system then freezes and I cannot do anything. It will not allow me to enter the BIOS or boot.

Please HELP!

are you installing xp on the new hard drive you installed or are you installing it on your old drive?

I tried installing it on the new HD. I have Vista on my old one. I disconnected the power to my old HD and i was able to get past the POST and use a Windows ME Startup Disk to start. When I entered FDISK I could see the new HD. I plugged in my old HD again and same issues as before!

install xp first, then install vista.

since vista doesnt use a boot.ini file instead uses a bcd.exe file that might be where you are running into a problem. read this thread.
http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.p...ual+boot+vista

when you dual boot a system, you usually want to install the older OS first, followed by the newer system.

I tried to install XP on the new drive again while the old drive was disconnected (the only way I cold get past the POST). I asks what partition I want to install to, so I choose the new drive. It copies all of the setup files and reboots. When it reboots, it goes through the same exact setup process again???

Try setting the original/old hard drive to the first boot device - or can you not even get into the bios it appears?

The only time I can get past the POST is when I disconnect the old HD, so I can't even enter the BIOS when it is connected!

Try connecting it to another SATA port on your motherboard. You'll have to excuse my newbish troubleshooting tips.

I appriciate all the help I can get, no matter what! I actually have it hooked up through IDE, not SATA. It's an ATA 133 drive. I don't think it's a connection problem as it was working fine earlier, before I tried to install XP on the new drive.

I have an AMD Athlon 64 on an Asus K8V-X motherboard. My old HD is a Maxtor 120 GB and my new HD is a Maxtor 320 GB. The HDs are set on the Primary IDE with the old HD set as master by jumper and the new is the slave (jumper removed). I have two DVD-ROMs both installed on the secondary IDE.

Like I said, I could see al of the above in the proper configuration in the BIOS the first time I booted up the system with the new HD installed. It wasn't until I tried to install XP on the new drive that things went downhill.

I now have the system running with the old HD power supply unplugged. I'm currently using XP's setup to do a full format (not quick) on the new drive. I'm going to try to install XP again and use your suggestion with Vista Boot Pro. The only problem is, I'm sure the setup program is going to get stuck in that loop again.

I guess that puts me back to my original question: how will I get back into Vista if I can't connect my old HD? The XP install is going well. I'm sure it's going to work now.

You need to jumper both drives to Cable Select when you use Ultra ATA cables. The position on the cable determines master or slave, master is on the end and slave is in the middle.

Ok, I've set the jumpers to Cable Select on both drives. The system still freezes at the same exact spot. Again, if I unplug the old drive, it boots up fine. I'm not opposed to reinstalling the OS on my old drive again, but I can't even get to it!

if you have just the old drive plugged in, and remove the new one, can you boot to the xp disc and install xp on the old drive, then once you get xp installed and up and running then turn off your pc and throw in the new drive, and boot to the vista disc and reinstall that OS on your new drive

I've tried booting with the old HD in, but the same problem occurs. I'm wondering if when I tried to install XP on the new drive, did I mess up the MBR???

Try splitting them up - one hard drive and one optical on each channel. Use 80 wire and CS on all 4 drives, make the hard drives masters and the opticals slaves.

A friend of mine suggested that. I'll have to by some 80. I'll post and let you know. Thanks for the suggestions!

The motherboard should have come with one 80 wire cable, one 40 wire cable, and one floppy cable.

It did. Right now both HDs are connected to the 80 on the primary IDE and the DVD-ROMs are connected to the 40 on the secondary IDE. I haven't bought the new wire yet as I'm not convinced it's a hardware issue. Before I initially tried to install XP on the new drive, both drive worked and I could enter the BIOS setup. It wasn't until I tried to install XP that things went downhill. I'm going to contact Maxtor and see if they can offer any solutions, but please keep ideas coming to me! I went to school with the people that work help lines....

I can't access the old drive at all if it's connected. I can't get past the POST to the boot process. I wish I could as then I could get my data, back it up and reinstall Vista. I spoke to the techies at Maxtor. They suggest I contact Microsoft. They agreed that it is probably a software issue, not a hardware issue.

Today I tried putting the HDs in every possible configuration. I had the old drive running as the master on the secondary IDE and the new drive as the master on the primary. The BIOS detected the new drive and as soon as it detected and displayed the information on the old drive, it froze. Again, no access to the BIOS.

I really don't want to contact Microsoft... They'll just tell me to contact Maxtor again. It's just going to turn into me chasing my tail!

You are absolutely right... they will refer you to the other company because they don't know what to do. Anyway, why don't you just keep the old drive that works in, install windows, then update the BIOS and try again.

I actually tried to update the BIOS, but I already have the most up-to-date version. I then tried to load the default values. When I did that my USB went all wigity-wack. So I've formatted the new drive (the one that works) and am now trying to reinstall XP, which is turning out to be a challenge.... I've never had problems like this before. Crazy!

Talking Booya

In case anyone was wondering, I got it to work. I ended up buying a drive enclosure that supports plug and play. I booted up into my new HD (turns out is was having MBR issues before, but I fixed that), fired up the drive in the enclosure, and sure enough I have information!

Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions. Keep up the good work!
