I've been asked to build a game rig for a friend's son. Problem is that I am not a gamer and do not really keep up with gaming requirements. The budget is about $800 and obviously the best bang for the buck and that will stand up to new games for awhile.
My main question is video card selection. While I have done some reading it seems there are varying opinions. The cards I see as candidates are: 6800GT 256 GDDR3 (x2 SLI) 7600GT 256 GDDR3 7900GS 256 GDDR3 X1600PRO 256 GDDR3 X1600PRO 512 GDDR2 X1800GTO 256 GDDR3 I would appreciate some advice or comparisons that will aid in deciding the direction of this build. Thanks for your replies.

In the $800 budget range I would choose a single or dual core AMD processor in the 939 or AM2 platform. Totally up to you. If you won't be upgrading it, go with the 939, very cheap processors right now.
Antec Sonata II with PSU Athlon 64 3700+/3800+ x2 Asus A8N5X/Asus M2N-E Corsair VS 2x512mb/Corsair XMS2 2x512mb 250gb Seagate 7200.10 XP Home (939/AM2)

If you can get a Core 2 Duo into that budget, that would be better. You can use a 945 r2 chipset board to cut costs there.

I think I can get a core 2 build within budget.
I was checking out the Asus offerings and while I take most of the feedback posted at Newegg with a grain of salt there seems to be quite a bit of complaints lately and mention of poor onboard audio. Is there reason for concern with Asus right now? Just out of curiosity how would (2) 7300GT or (2) 7600GT cards in SLI compare to one 7900GT or x1800GTO card? Does an SLI system support very many games (or not support) and is it correct that there is not currently a good board for Core 2 Duo with SLI? |

Nope, not yet. Stick with a single card, it's cheaper anyway. Intel chipsets for Intel processors at this time.
