First Build ( Video Card Question)

I am trying to build my first computer. I have the PC Mech book ,Build Your Own PC also have the CD. I am trying to post this as fast as I can as I am using an older laptop right now that wants to freeze up alot of times.

The book says you HAVE TO HAVE A VIDEO CARD before you can continue to see if system will POST. I know I should list all my parts, I will later because of the mentioned reason above. I will list the motherboard it is an ABit SG-80 the board has onboard sound & graphics.

My question. Why do I need a graphics card if I have graphics built into the board? Thanks for feedback.

You don't need one if you have integrated graphics. That should be removed from the book and/or noted otherwise.

On board graphics takes the place of a video card. You should be able to post with the onboard graphics.

Onboard Sound & Graghics

I did not think I had to put in a card. Wanted to make sure as I am ready to start putting this thing together. Do you know if the onboard sound & graghics are good for this board? Thanks for the feedback.

The onboard sound is fine for basic sound (it is 5.1 capable) and the onboard graphics is fine for basic graphics. I wouldn't try to game with those graphics though.

Thanks, I think will probably add a graphics card later, might put in sound card also. The sound cards I've looked at do not cost much anyway. Thanks again.

The onboard sound is as good as most cheap sound cards.
