Asus P5B-e repaired board Problem

Hello everyone,
Got the mother boardback from Asus after repairs had been completed. I have it out of case set up. Sitting on mobo box, Cpu( Intel P4 630, 3.0g 90NM, 2m) and stock fan, 2 x 1g Corsair 240 pin,DDR2 Dimm, they are positioned in sockets A1, B1, Video card Diamond Radeon X550 PCI-E 256 SB, Brand new replacement PSU 450 smartpower 2.0 from Antec for the one that was in the case. See other threads for info. Dell monmitor 17". That is it. I have the 24 pin plug in and ATX 4 pin in the socket. The monitor show green blinking light,turned on the psu and green light came on , on the board. Touched the power switch 2 post and the cpu fan came on and the video fan came on and waited for video on screen, blank and black. The one thing I did notice is that it didn't cycle as before I sent it off. What am I surpose to see on the screen. I powered down and turned off power and unpluged the psu and took out B1 memory stick and reconnected power supply and power up. Green light on board lit up and touched power post and same, no display, shut down and disconnected pws and switched memory module and put the one from B1 into A1 and left A1 out. connected everything and power up same. Shut down and here I am sending this thread.

Just to be on the safe side I took the monitor to this ws and tried it and it came up with no problems.

Took the CPU and the Fan with the memory down to the local computer shop. Had them install the cpu and fan on another asus board booted up well no problems, then had them put the memory 1 stick at a time in another computer booted up fine and ran a mem check and then had them do it with both just to be on the safe side.No problems. So I'm back to either the video card or mother board. Since the mobo was just sent back from Asus and I would expect that they did a quality control check on the board before they sent it out to me, it leaves it down to the video card. Does anyone else have any idea's before I go out and get a new video card. Thanks Jim

Wait, so nothing was displayed on the monitor?

correct. the green light in the front of the monitor binks.

If everything else in the case is running, I would suspect a bad video card, but if it shuts down, it could be a number of things, most commonly PSU or overheating problems.

ok, correction on the shut down problem. That was from the last thread. This is pretty much a new thread and the only thing that I was concerned with is that some of the equipment might be damaged from the orginal Asus P5B-e problem and now with the listed equipment installed and the mobo starts up without any cycleing the only problem is no video. More I think about it, the orginal problem was with the intel mobo that started all this mess, it might not have been the mobo after all. I was getting pink screen at start up and also windows with missing sections, it also to a couple of times hitting the reset button to bootup.We went with the psu problem, replaced it no improvement, sent back intel mobo for this mobo installed it and thats when I got the cycleing and a pop, sent off to Asus and now I have it back with this new problem of no video. Beg, borrow, or steal a different video card for testing purposes. All you need is an old junker legacy PCI card to test for POST video. I keep an old S3 Virge 4mb card around for this use.

I called newegg and requested a RMA for the video card. This way I know it is new and hopfully it will work. I've been calling all my friends for a used card, PCI or PCI-e no luck yet. What do you think about the board, Asus would have done a quality control check before they sent it out? By the way glc, like the new monogram you have chossen. Thanks for the help.

I have a gift cert at the place and figured I could use it for something good or usable! Got a new card coming from new egg and also back up from ebay.Will keep you posted on the boot up.

Update, the gift card paid off, I got a pCI video card to check boot up for $8.00 new total 14.00, put it in the pci slot and touched the 2 start post( must say that this is out of case boot.Memory,cpu/fan and 24 and 4 post ps connected to board) and in couple of sec ASUS Screen came on!!!! Thank all mighty. Now I have to get into the case and see if it boots in there, have one question. I have a new X550 Ati card coming in replacement of old one,can I use the PCI card for set up until I get the new card. The card is ATI Rage PCI Card 8mb. Thanks Jim

Try the new card first. If you get a boot screen then go ahead and install drivers.

Ok, I was hoping that I could get this thing up and running and then just slap the new card in the computer when I get it. It has all the drivers for it in the computer already. Thanks for the reply.

Hello all,
Got the new video card and did a out of case install,it booted up well. Installed the mobo and this is where I'am at on the boot up.
I hooked up the power supply 24 and atx 4 plugs, power to dvd rom and dvd rom and floppy.All is pluged into the proper outlets on the mobo. Hooked up power to the first and second sata hd.The first is sata connected to sata 1 as told when getting ready to do a XP repair.The second is not connected to the mobo. The cpu and fan have been working and the memory has been work to. The sata is pluged into sata 1 outlet.Hooked up the monitor and key bo and mouse. Turn on the power and got a green light. The ps is antech 500 smart power 2.0. Turned on monitor and then turn on computer, started fans and then off. Green light still on. Then diconnected power. unpluged everything except power supply,started up and then it shut off.. Still have the same problem. So I took the new antec ps I got for replacement for the antec sonata ps 450w 2.0. Plug in 24 and 4.the plug cord and flipped switch. Got green light and then I turn on comp, it booted. Went to bios and set up the time and check the boot sequence. 1.cd, 2. lighton dvd-rw rom, 3. hd, 4. floppy, 5.lighton dvd rom. Checked to see if it was set to ide for hd. and it was. save and exit.
Disconnected the ps and hooked up the 500w 2.0 ps to every thing(dvd rom,dvd-rw,mobo , fans, , started it up and it went to start and then it shut downed. Disconnected everything form the power supply.Took out the 500w ps and replaced it with the 450w ps. Hooked up the ps 24 and 4 and flipped switch and it started boot. Shut down and hooked up the dvd rom, started and it booted. shut down and then hooked up the dvd-rw and floppy booted, it started. hooked up #1 sata, booted it started( not connected to mobo), shut down and hooked ps to #2 sata and booted up, started and it shut down by itself. I shut down and disconneced the sata and hooked it up to another lead from the ps. Booted and same thing. Starts and then sut down. So I asume that the #2 hd has a problem. I'm hopeing it is the back up hd and not the master hd. So as it stand now I have it up and booting to Bios with 1 sata plug into sata 1 outlet. The problem now is it doen't see the hd. Any help would be great. Thanks Jim

I guess the first ps that came with the sonata case did a number on everything in the computer?
Update, changed to sata cord and plug it into sata 1 and power up and booted into bio's. Checked to see if hd is seen and it was, so I asume it was a bad sata cord. I can't believe how much new equipment and acc can turn up bad! When building a computer you really need to double everything to check out problems. Is this saving money and stress on self build computers, I wouldn't change a thing, the satisfaction of getting it up and running is the best feeling you sef satifaction. Jim
Now I'll try to do a XP repair from the thread glc recommened.Will keep you posted.

Xp repair! Placed the XP retail cd into master dvd rw and restarted. It booted up to sign in window and I pick my log in and the computer came up with a warning that the computer has had a major hardware chang and it needs to be reactivated within 3 days. It give me a choice yes or no. What the chice, I'm bad on 50-50 choice, Jim

Update: I went into Bios to make sure it was set to the correct dvdrw drive. The cdrom was !st, changed to dvdrw and saved, Rebooted and it booted to cd. Going through set up for XP Repair. Started to check and install info and it got to hrdware setup and it came up with an error.

One of the components that Windows needs to continue setup could not be installed.

If installing from cd there might be a problem with disc, try cleaning the disc oruse another disc.

So I took out the dice clean the disk and placed it back in computer and it rebooted to xp repair. chose retry install from c/d. This is wher e i'm at now. its running so far installing. This error something to worry about. Thanks Jim

just got finished reactivation, have some error messages.

1. Photo gallery is trying to install. Don't know what photo gallery is at this point.
2. The internet connection isn't working, I went into bios and checked the onboard 1394 was enabled.There isn't any lights on either side of the rj45 outlet?

For your 2nd problem, you want the LAN enabled, the 1394 is Firewire.

2nd problem, stupid me I know that! But it wasn't in my head. Do you think installing all the update for window will correct the photo gallery problem. Cause it sound like a W XP program.

Yeah, all your Windows problems seem to be related with your OS not your hardware.

Well, went in and checked to make sure the Lan was enabled. Still no lights on the port. Think port might be dead?

Well, went out and got Ethernet card and put it in, have INTERNET connection. Updating now for anti virus then I'll download windows up dates. Hopefully it will correct some of the errors I'm getting.

Did you install the motherboard drivers for the onboard NIC? If it is dead on arrival I'd return the motherboard.

I'm not sure what you mean double posting. I've tried to keep everything that has happen since the ps went on the bling causing all of these problems and now it is coming to the end of the problem. I've already sent this board back to Asus for repair and I would to think they would have check everything out. As for the mobo drivers, I read in the manual that to effectively load and update drivers I had to make sure that all of the XP windows were updated before loading mobo drivers.Reason being, I did a xp repair and it removes all of the update for windows. This really bothers me about dbl posting. the attachments were there to give anyone who was intrested in helping me a chance to review what has transpired since Sept..
At this time the computer is updating windows and I'll go from there! Jim
