Upgrade for ~$700 cnd

My roommates parents want to upgrade their computer. They are looking to spend around $700 cdn. I've been out of the loop for a while so I'm not to sure what to do as far as dual core, PCI express and FSB speeds.

They need:
CPU
Mobo
Ram
HDD
DVD burner
PSU
Video Card

They have:
Case
Mouse
Keyboard
Monitor

It's going to be used for business, digital photagraphy and some gaming. Where should I go with this. I''m happy to go with either Intel or AMD

That's about $500 USD (had to do some math ). And with that kind of money, this what I'd go with. Note that I will get the parts off of Newegg, you will have to get them from NCIX or something.

CPU - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819116001
Mobo - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131041
Ram - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145568
HDD - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822144415
DVD burner - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106014
PSU - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817104954
Video Card - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130017

All comes out to around $550, and there is a rebate too. This is really the best bang for the buck in the price range your looking for. Video card may be overkill, depends on what games you play. I have used the Asus P5L-MX and Intel Pentium D 805 myself twice. Not a bad combo.

Newbuilder - why not just research it at NCIX? You can't just apply the exchange rate, components cost more in Canada due to taxes and import duties.

Is the case they have a standard ATX case? If it's an older style AT case, it won't work. If it's from a namebrand computer (ie, Dell, HP, etc) than it won't work either.

This looks pretty solid. Came in a little over $700 but I'm sure I could convince them. It's an ATX case, only about 4 years old. I'll probably just get the parts at my local computers show, I've got a resellers account with them. Thanks for the advice.

Now you could always consider another ATX Asus motherboard that supports the Pentium D. Nothing wrong with it being mATX, it just has onboard video integrated. Since your gaming, you will still need a video card. I personally like the P5L-MX because it is very easy to setup.

Find someone that can get you parts from Comtronic, they are my primary wholesaler for me in atlantic canada but they are accross canada. Every thing new will be over the counter for the first year.

http://www.comtronic.ca/cci/

Here are some Canadian Wholesale Prices (before tax):
Pentium® D 805 - 2.66GHz Socket 775 Dual Core 1MB/core 533FSB (R)64Bit $109.00
Crucial Rendition - DDR2 1G Retail PC5300 $129.00
MSI 945P Neo3F S775 Conroe ATX $95.00
WD 1600JS - 160GB 7200 SATA II 8MB $67.00
GSA-H10N DVDRW OEM Black Dual Layer, Dual Format $36.00
Enermax EG425P-VE - V2.2 420W $69.00
Sapphire X800GTO2 - 256 PCIx 2DVI VIVO $124.00

Total =$629.00 Wholesale 10% markup =$62.90 = $691.90 + Tax (No OS)

Thats a full size board that will take a core 2 duo for down the road.

Hope that old case can move some heat out though, an aux fan or 2 for $5.00 for an antec 80MM would be a good idea.
