memory question.....
OK finally got everything working but now I have an issue.....I have two gig of ram. Used on stick when doing the setup. Install of OS went ok finallly.; Got windows up and running and decided to install the second stick of ram. After putting it in go some message telling a file was missing...dont know the message....I took out the second stick and systme boots fine....as long as I only have one stick of ram doesn't matter which all is well...if I install second stick I get unpredictable results .... any ideas....what other info do you need to help with this?

Perhaps your second stick is defective.

maybe I wasn't clear in my original post. I will try again. Regardless of which stick of memory I use as long as I use a single stick everything seems to work ok. As soon as I put in the second stick I get errors. The ram was purchased as a matched pair so it may be that somehow the two are not exacly matched even though they were supposed to be. It is corsair memory so it is a reliable brand and not a cheepo brand.

That FX 62 processor doesn't have the same issues that the AM2 boards were having with memory does it? I know that there have been memory issues with some of the AMD boards and I know that the AM2 boards were included in that population. I would start by inquiring about this problem with the ASUS company. I know that you probably checked before you bought the Corsair Ram that it was compatable with your motherboard, but maybe they might be able to Shed some light on the issue.

Sorry, I should have noted that the PC I am having this issue with is an Intel dual core. My signature line displays my last build. I had all kinds of issues with that one so I went with the Intel Dual Core on this one with Asus mobo. You are correct I did buy ram that is supposedly compatible with the mobo. I have to say this is a good looking unit has quite a bit of flash with the blue led fans and uv ligts etc. I have not had as many glitches with it as the AMD unit. It is just strange that it seems to work fine with either stick of the ram but not with both installed. I will be doing a memory test this weekend. I guess I will have to test each individually.

If it is not a matched pair of sticks then try running with dual channel disabled. Sorry, I just realised you have already stated this further down the thread.

Check your motherboard manual that the second stick is in the correct DIMM slot. Some boards are picky about which slots are populated.
Run Memtest on each stick individually: http://www.memtest.org/ Make sure to run the test for awhile, more then one or two passes. It is also possible that the DIMM slot itself is defective. Only way to know that though is to find some known good ram to test.

It doesn't look like you've tried the 'second' stick only - you should do that.

Actually I have. I have a matched pair and as long as I put a single stick in it seems to work ok. If put both sticks in I have problems...errors, freezing etc. I This is realy got me bamboozled. I may just order another set and see if it clears up...if not then it almost has to be the second dim slot must be bad somehow. I have never seen that but there is always a first time. in the beginning I had issues trying to load the OS....while I had both sticks in...I removed on stick and os loaded fine. Thanks for all the replies...it really helps being able to bounce things off folks.

I think I glc mentioned something about XMS RAM with CAS4 being unstable or fussy in some motherboards. Try replacing it with the CAS5 RAM...supposed to be more stable, less issues.

What specific Asus Mobo do you have? It may end up being as simple as alron said. If your motherboard has 4 memory slots (use this for an illustration: l l l l), fill the bolded slots with your ram (the far left, and the middle right). That is the normal Ram setup on most boards for two sticks of Ram in dual channel. You could also mess around with different slot combonations if that doesn't work. You could also clear the COMS and try booting up with both sticks of ram in the 1, 3 position and see if the motherboard picks up on the new ram arrangment if none of the above works.

Thanks for the feedback...The RAM is Corsair CM2X1024-6400C4 4-4-4-12 800Mhz 1024. The mobo is Asus P5N32-SLI SE Deluxe
Now...the manual indicates that channel A is sockets A1 and A2. Channel B is sockets B1 and B2. I have tried with sticks in A1 & A2, both in B1 and B2 and both in A1 and B1. I did get it to boot with both in A1 & A2 but got a file missing error win32 configsys or something like that. Even did a repair on windows but no change. I did find a review of this mobo on Tiger Direct where the user had the same issue...worked fine with one stick but not two. I though dual channel have to use the indicated dig... either A1 + A2 or B1 + B2. |

They are color coded A1 is black and B1 is black. A2 is yellow and B2 is yellow. However the manual says channel A is sockets A1 and A2. Manual states that for dual channel configuration memory size per channel must be the same (DIMM_A1 + DIMM_A2 = DIMM_B1 + Dimm_B2) so that would seem to be one yellow slot and one black slot

Same here. I think it's just funky wording on the part of the manual.

Well I guess I can try all combinations heck there aren't that many. I have tried both black slots which on this board would be A1 + B1 but I get no video or I get other types of errors using that. On the board layout the sim slots appear to be paired ll ll with the left pair being A1 and A2 and the right pair being B1 and B2. Again the left one of each pair is black and the right one of each pair is yellow. I know this thread is getting old but it really bothers me I can't get this thing to work with 2 sticks. Thanks for everyones replies so far.

OK...here are the final results of my memory swapping. X is where I slotted the sticks and the results of that match are below each entry. The lay out on the board is
Slot A1 A2 B1 B2 yellow black yellow black A1 only ok B1 only ok A1 + B1....blue screen memory dump or post loops A2 + B2....win could not start file missing win\sys32\config\sys error or memory dump B1 + B2....nothing won't even post A1 + A2...blue screen physical mem dump A2 + B1...blue screen physical mem dump Either stick works fine as long as I only use one stick . What say yee now folks? Last edited by rojoreds; 11-12-2006 at 12:46 PM. |
