Question about transfering mp3s

I have about 800 mp3 files (192 bitrate) on my crusty old laptop. They use up about 5GB.

I want to upgrade eventually to a different system and I would like to be able to transfer these files onto a external hard drive. I would also like to add more mp3 files to this hard drive using my crusty old laptop. I would like to do this because I cannot afford to buy a new system just yet - I'm saving up.

Question - Will I be able to install this new hard drive into a new computer? And is it possible to transfer these mp3s to another drive. I'm using Windows 98 on my laptop and would like to upgrade to Windows XP on my new system. The new system will be a desktop.

Novice here

Thanks In Advance

That's a few questions...

Connecting an external drive by USB? Transfer them as you would to any hard drive after plugging in the USB drive. It will show up in My Computer as a regular hard drive would.

Transferring files to an XP desktop or to another laptop - connect the two computers with a CAT5 ethernet cable and run the network setup wizards on each computer.

I think 98 and XP will network without much special attention, but someone else here will know more about that.

you would need a crossover cable if you directly attach one computer to another without using a hub or switch.

by running the windows network setup wizard, and create a floppy disk to run in the 9 machine should set bot machines up to see each other. if not follow this tutorial:

If you have a DVD burner I would just save them to DVD and transfer them that way. Also you would have your mp3's backed up to DVD if something happens to you HD. I have all my mps's saved this way.
