Psu Vs Motherboard
The Newegg reviews of Antec NeoHE 550 contain a lot of flack about incompatibility with ASUS boards.
I have applied lots of glc's "take with a grain of salt" philosophy, but 75 5-star reviews can't be all bad. I am following glc's suggestions. When he speaks, there's not much argument. Therefore he must how what he's talking about. I have Seagate Barracuda 300 gb sata, Intel Core 2 Duo E6600. P180 case Will be getting Asus P5B or P5B-E, Invidia Quadro FX1300 video, starting with 2GB ram (Corsair) and will probably add more. OS will be Win XP Pro X64. Will probably add another HDD (80GB system) and maybe a third one later. And the usual assortment of cd, dvd, fd, cpu fan etc. (added all the above because someone always asks "what is the system", and now you know) The flack about Antec PSU and ASUS seems to center around another series of boards. (A8N?) There also seemed to be a solution if you were aware of it. Has the "issue" between Antec & ASUS been resolved? Is there anything I need to know about this matchup before I start firing this thing up? Was it all just a bunch of nothing from people with ........................(fill in the blank). I'm asking because I bought the Neo HE 550 on sale retail locally for Newegg price (read the sale inserts in Friday's paper). Do I need to take it back? Sri for the long-winded post, but I'm from Texas and you know how we like to run our mouths.

I believe Antec had some quailty issues with some of their Neo series of PSUs. As for issues between a PSU and motherboards, there probably are other things going on with the computers that the reviewers don't see or didn't tell. With any modular PSU, you can have problems with poor connections.

You are correct. There was a major Neo vs. A8N issue a while back. From what ive heard they have fixed the problem in the newer HE versions.
Still, it is a very high quality powersupply. If it has an issue, it will not take the whole computer with it. If you have already bought, I would suggest you try it out. I have heard about reliability issues every once in a while. Just a offtopic note, How much did that neo HE cost ya? BUT heres MY tip: In my experience units made before Dec. 2005 could cause problems. Check your serial nr. 0512......... with a Rev A2.1 or higher should be ok. Ser.0603...... Rev. A3.1 are definately OK.

$119.99 at Fry's Electronics in Plano, Texas, which is a suburb of Dallas. That's also where I got the Seagate. They had a sale on last week.
I'll buy local if it's on sale and the sales tax is about equal to shipping, which makes it a wash. Plus I get a chance to see what the FedUPS guys did to the darn box. Bought the case there for that reason. Paid $20 more but I got to check the box for damage They have an 8-page color insert in the Friday Dallas Morning News. I always check, helps me plan my weekend. Their standard price for P5B Deluxe is $60 over Newegg. Sometimes they have cases on sale for Newegg prices. And they don't carry everything, unless you want to include coffee pots & alarm clocks................................... |
