New build, But PS started smoking!
Hi all,
New to forums, so first off Hi to everyone. Secondly this is my first build, so learning curve for me at the minute is a steep one. Having read and followed the guidance on these boards, i managed to connect everything up however when i turned on the power supply, the motherbaord fans didn't start up. After a few seconds i noticed a small amount of smoke and immediately swithced off the PSU. Upon investigation i noticed that a few cable on the PSU to the Motherbaord had melted slightly. My question is, could there be possible damage to my new motherboard & Processor. How do i check if there is, or am i down to a "fingers crossed" situation? My spec: Processors Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4ghz - Skt775 Fsb1066 4mb http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/112706/rb/22141683293 Motherboard Gigabyte Intel SKT775 965P/ICH8 PCI-E SATAII 8Channel Audio Virtual Dual BIOS ATX http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...uct_uid=113820 PSU Coolermaster eXtreme Power 650W PSU - ATX 12V V2.01 120mm Fan 20+4pin http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/116522/rb/22142138817 |

The safe answer is that the PSU is probably shot/motherboard probable/CPU small chance.
Before going any further, try a new PSU and test out of the case(may have something shorting out the motherboard.

can you elaborate a little on test outside case please?
Do you mean connect up the PSU to the motherboard with nothing on it other than the processor heat skin / fan? |

Remove all the components from the case and do an out of case build. if the connectors melted then something was short circuit when you applied power. Recheck all connections and verify the standoffs for the motherboard were all in the proper place.

When you installed the motherboard in the case, did you use the brass standoffs only in the case mounting holes that match the motherboard mounting holes (the holes with the metal rings around them)?

Yes, i used the brass stand offs and only used the holes (ring around them) which lined up between the case and motherboard.
