First build- parts???

hey whats up guys...

first off let me say that ive been floatin around your forms for a few day and ive learn'd a lot... your stickys are very helpful!

alright heres the dilly:

i have wouldnt like to spend more that 700-800 bucks on this build. i have lcd moniter keybord mouse and such... i also have my old compaq presario that i was hopeing i could use the case and maybe the sound card and the PSU.

Sound card is a 'sound blaster live! 5.1' its outta a 2000 model compaq so i wouldnt mind up grading.

PSU is 250w id rather spend the bucks and get that new as well unless you think it will work...

and if theres anything else that u think i could salvage let me know and ill check it out... the computer crashed cuz of a virus (too much porn... lol )

so i would like to use this computer for gaming, ( diablo 2, WoW and anyother game i could find that i could waste my time on) school work (writing papers n'such ) basic internet suff... music thats about it.. u get the justs... i want it to beable to walk up to me and kick my ass... lol JK... ( could u make it walk?)

it could have AMD or Intel i could care less ( unless one is easyer/cheeper to build than the other one)

uhh another question ...i was planning on building this at my work... and its kinda dusty in here, would that hurt anything over a two month peroid...

ok uhh i think that about covers it. any replys are much appreciated

You're pretty much looking at a whole new build. The case and PSU won't be re-usable. If you've got a virus, you could try fixing it...but if you're ready to move onto a new computer...

What do you mean by a two month period? Are you going to keep it there for that long...cause it won't take that long to build. How dusty? is it a shop of some sort?

ive already torn apart the computer... its older and im all ready to jump into the build new bandwaggon

Store and build the parts at home. The dust and crap in a welding shop will kill your parts.

Imagine this: My PC has been in a house, quite free of dust to the naked eye. I opened the case, dust everywhere, it really affected my heatsink fan. Now consider leaving it in a place with highly noticeable dust... you get the point. Good luck.

If the Compaq case is/looks like a standard mid-tower case- maybe do some case modding since your in a metal shop. And if you trash the case, your not out any money.

I'm sure you could hack the old case to get a new system to fit - but it won't be pretty. Much easier to get a cheap basic case and be done with it.

I would save up money until you have enough to buy everything at once. Buying across several months isn't really wise. Stuff you buy today will be outdated in 3 months. If you wait to buy everything at once you'll get the most for your money.

If the case will fit a standard ATX power supply and the I/O shield can be punched out and replaced, it could be reused as long as you can figure out the front panel wire connectors. Not worth the hassles in my opinion, just get a new case and quality power supply.

You aren't going to get a case *with* power supply for 50 bucks that can safely handle a gaming quality video card though. Even a $50 standalone power supply is going to be questionable.
