Quick Question (Choosing a PSU in UK)
Got a friend who wants to upgrade the Graphics Card on a proprietary HP Media Centre.
It came with an x1600, and he wants to upgrade to the 8800GTX. So, I asked for more info, and pretty much determined that his Power Supply wasn't up to the task (one one 12V rail, and it didn't meet the published 30 amps required). He's in the UK, and he needs a good power supply that meet the following requirements: 1. Dual +12V rails 2. Two PCI-E connectors (man, what a power guzzler.. my 6600 doesn't even need a PCI-E connector) 3. 450W or more (as published by BFG) ... and to top it off, he needs a place to order it from. I suggested oc.uk, but their resellerratings score is rather low... his closest physical computer store was PCWorld, but they only sold Jeantech PSU's, and I didn't have an opinion on those. Play.com doesn't seem to sell PSUs at all... Anybody have any suggestions? Last edited by Kareeser; 11-19-2006 at 11:04 PM. |

Your friend has some serious limitations and the choices I see is to downgrade the video card or if he wants the 8800 for sure then he needs to be thinking a new build depending on the CPU and amount of ram he has now.

http://overclockers.co.uk/ -I've had alot of my friends who do live in the UK purchase from here, they have had much sucess.
I also hear good things about www.komplett.ie and www.ebuyer.co.uk. What are his other system specs? I suggest a very high quality 500w. I've seen alot of people running on quality 450w's and have been experiencing issues when gaming for longer periods of time. These gtx's take a lot more power then a X1900XT/X, which also has a so called "450w" requirement. So I would always go by brand quality and stability over pure wattage/ampere ratings.

I second overclockers. Their resellerratings score might be low, but so are a lot of other UK online shops. I don't think enough UK-ers post reviews on the website to make it remotely objective. Everyone has different experiences with different stores, but I've had the best luck with OC, so I stick with them.
