For the CPU: go for a Core 2 Duo instead/ An E6300 for budget or E6600
Case: nice case/power supply probably junk
You will need a video card and how powerfull of one you select will determine the size of the power supply.

No, clock speed doesn't matter anymore. It is about the core architecture and the power of the processor. The Core 2 Duo is definately much better than the Pentium D for gaming and most other tasks.

You have linked two of the same thing, right?

Anyway, the e6300 is a great choice for gaming.

Get the Boxed model - the OEM comes without a cooler, and a shorter warranty.

I'd get the ASUS P5B motherboard over the gigabyte - it's actually cheaper, and ASUS is top quality. The Gigabyte offers crossfire (dual video cards) - which is unnecessary and impractical for anything but top level gaming systems with top level budgets.

You picked out the wrong memory (and a substandard brand). You need DDR2-667 for a C2D system on a P965 chipset. I'd go with Corsair Value Select memory; try and find a matched pair kit of 2x1GB modules (I'd get 2GB of memory for a gaming system)

You might also consider a Seagate 7200.10 Hard drive - they have double the cache of the .9 series.

I'd suggest switching the DVD-RW to a Lite-On - Sonys are just rebadged lite-ons with substandard software. Lite-ons come with Nero.

Get that case if you like the look of it, but you'll need to bin the power supply and choose a quality one. What you need will depend on the video card you choose, and that depends on your budget and how much gaming performance you want.

Have you considered comparing prices with those on www.overclockers.co.uk and www.ebuyer.co.uk? I can vouch for those two online stores, but I've never used savastore.

£500 is a very tight budget for a gaming system. I just priced up what I would consider a good spec for a gaming computer, and the total came out at £770. This included a
Core2Duo 6300
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...odid=CP-126-IN

ASUS P5B Motherboard
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...odid=MB-151-AS

2GB Corsair VS DDR2-667 Memory
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...odid=MY-097-CS

WD 250GB SATA Hard Drive
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...odid=HD-046-WD

Lite-on DVD-RW
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...odid=CD-062-LO

Antec Sonata II Case with quality 450w power supply
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...odid=CA-040-AN

Windows XP Home
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...odid=OS-001-MS

and an ATI Sapphire X1950 Pro 256MB Video card.

If you can stretch to that kinda budget, then that would be a great gaming system. If not, I'd consider saving the pounds until you can

Or if you must have it now, get 1gb of memory, 80gb hard drive, and a 7600gt. That will put you somewhere around £600 I believe, if not less.

Fair enough suggestion, but I'm a firm believer in doing things 'right'. Saving that £100 or so would create at best a mid-range gamer, and I personally don't believe that's worth the saving.

Really depends on how many games you play. I play one game only, and the requirements are mediocre at best. I will get 2gb of memory and some extras eventually.
