A boring build- just the basics
Well, I am tired of paying for my surfing time at the internet cafe, so I would like to get a system for home for $600 max.
This post is twofold. I want some suggestions on some high quality pre-built systems for sale and some specs on a build to see if I can actually build a budget system myself for said price. I'll build my grand gamer next year when I get the primo job I'm working towards. It will only be for simple computing tasks, light gaming at the most, only needing a good low cost graphics card. I prefer Intel for the CPU. I would like to have about a Gig of RAM if possible. It really doesn't have to be Core 2 or anything, although if it fit the budget that would be nice. Don't need a monitor or keyboard.... Also, I would like to get some data and music files from my old HDD, it's OS is Win98, how would I do that if I had an XP OS? TIA |

DELL is your answer...low budget custom builds are rarely worth it!

If your looking for bare bones, then id agree with the above post. Get a box deal from Dell for about 399. Youll appreciate the support and save yourself the hassle of building. Too often youll try to save money on parts and end up with inferior gear. So why bother.

Well you could always do this:
Asus P5B Pentium D 805 1gb of Corsair ValueSelect DDR2 667 Hard drive of your choice eVGA 7600gt Liteon DVD burner Then upgrade to a Core 2 Duo.

monitor and keyboard isn't needed, i'd suspect that speakers aren't either.
this is probably the only situation in which I'd tell somebody to grab up a Dell... they do have good customer support though and it will definitely last through web browsing and very light gaming. My suggestion is to pawn it off on a buddy or something when you finally build the gamer system next year or whenever. |

Since you have your monitor and outside stuff, here's a budget build that works:
INTEL Pentium D 805 Smithfield Foxconn 865G7MF-SH Motherboard 1GB CRUCIAL Ballistix PC3200 160 GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 ATA Hard Drive XFX GeForce 6200 AGP Video Card A Good 400 -450 watt PSU. (See our list) you obviously have your optical drives. It may be dated stuff, but it all works together very well .You should be able to get all of it within that price range.

Chuck4456's list looks good, but there are two things I'd change for sure. Change the motherboard to the P5B like I said above so that rather than building another system later, you can just reuse everything and add a Core 2 Duo. And for the video card, choose any PCI-e card you like that fits your budget, really.

there are a lot of cheap video cards with GDDR2 memory on them... a little dated now, yes, but will be more than acceptable for your needs

Cool! Thanks, guys, I appreciate the input.
As the time draws near for my check to arrive, I feel more inclined to build my own. I'd prefer the control I would have over the components and would definitely enjoy the accomplishment of doing it on my own. EDIT: Here's a parts list from Newegg so far. Intel Pentium D 805 $94.49 ASUS P5B Socket T $134.99 CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB (2 x 512MB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 $106.99 SPARKLE ATX- 400Watts Power Supply $39.99 SAPPHIRE 100143L Radeon X1300PRO 256MB GDDR2 PCI Express x16 $79.99 Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB $94.99 LITE-ON 16X DVD±R DVD Burner $30.99 That brings it to a total of about $600.... COmments, anyone, on the choices? Last edited by TimPoet; 11-21-2006 at 06:05 PM. |

That looks good, and it will be upgradeable for the future. You will need a case to put it in. A budget one like this should do: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811147045. Sparkle power supplies have noisy fans. The Xclio 450BL would be a good, quieter choice: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817189003 (and it's the same price as your pick). You could get this Foxconn board instead: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813186102 , but if you are planning on upgrading it to a gamer next year, you will probably want to keep the P5B. If you need to save money, you could probably get by with a 128MB version of the X1300: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814125027 . You are also going to need to get an OS, Windows XP Home is $90 from newegg (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...2E16832116169). Enjoy your build!

If you're looking for a cheap PSU check this one out: http://shop3.outpost.com/product/458...H:MAIN_RSLT_PG
I got mixed reviews from the folks helping me with my build but here it is anyway. |

Ultra's are not a good idea. The PSU list (http://www.forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=131195) puts them under the bad catergory. The Sparkle that you picked would be fine, except for the noisy fan, that is why I suggested the Xclio, because it has a quiet 120mm fan, it is the same price as the sparkle, and it has more watts, and probably more amps.

Actually, I've heard the Ultra V series are almost decent. However you're right, I would never trust my money on it. I like to use Antec and Fortron Source power supplies.

question about video card:
Will this mobo take a Radeon 7000? Or is that card too ancient? I may need to skimp on a card until next payday. |

Well, i just placed my order on Newegg sans the HDD and vid card- I'll use my old HDD and see if the Radeon 7000 will work in the meantime.
The payment for the order may fail to go thru since they ask for the toll free number on the back of the card and my card has none. That was a new trick on me. Funny thing is, the Newegg site dropped my saved Shopping Cart twice, must be a server problem. That was a little irritating. Don't know if they'll ship this week since tomorrow is Thanksgiving, I imagine they'll take the day off, maybe even Friday, too. We'll see.... Just found out the R7000 won't work and I need to get onboard video. Hmmm, Newegg doesn't offer the P5B with onboard video, not sure if Asus even makes one.... Excellent, Red! Thanks!
I contacted Newegg thru their Live Chat function and they've already replaced it. That is a great feature they have. |

Decided to go to a cheaper budget build
Intel Pentium 4 524 Prescott 3.06GHz - Retail 72.99
Intel 865G Micro ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail 62.99 CORSAIR ValueSelect 512MB (2 x 256MB) DDR 400 Dual Channel 62.99 Fortron Source ATX400-PA 400W Power Supply - OEM 36.99 DYNAPOWER USA Titan C07.M3.15A1 Black SGCC Steel MicroATX Mini Tower Computer Case- Retail 44.99 Newegg has it including shipping and handling for total of 302.82 I have the rest of the components, I'm going to use my old HDD which has Win98, I won't use this for any gaming, just internet usage. This saves me money by using legacy components and still gives me the pleasure of building my own since Dell's seemingly excellent E520 with newer components for only $400 won't tell me the mobo, RAM or HDD manufacturer- they said they make their own mobos, I'm not sure about that one. I won't trust them on the quality of the parts.... So, I will build my own, for the first time. Any problems with these parts? |

Is there a workaround for the fast cpu problem? Hmmm, I might just have to cough up the $109 for XPee. I wouldn't want to buy the parts until I knew I could get away with Win 98.... Actually, Mazda persuaded me and I'm going to go for the Pentium D 805 and this mobo he suggested in a PM. That is, if I can use Win 98 with this higher tech build. Guess I have to find compatible RAM. ANy advice on this? |

Hmmm. I have a box with a P4 2.8gHz Northwood running 98se.
98se may have a problem with dual core verses single core(which maybe why itworks for me). Newegg has XP Home OEM for $89.99 Last edited by flanzig1; 11-26-2006 at 03:22 PM. |

As far as RAM goes, I found this at Newegg.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145567 The Gigabyte website calls for cm2x512-8500 and this one is cm2x512-6400. Will it still work? Thanks, flanz, for the price of XPee, I want to get the Media Center edition with SP2. |

I would highly suggest you pay a few bucks extra and opt for this board:
Asus P5L-MX And that ram is fine. You could even get by with some good ol' corsair valueselect. Corsair VS 512mb Also much cheaper.

I'd go with Mr. Ferrari's suggestions. I have used THE EXACT SAME COMBO, so I know first hand it works and you should not have any problems. I suggest you use XP though, still - I think I'd get sick if I had to use Windows 98 on my new PC!

I always stay with at least a small mid-tower for uATX mobos. Leaves working room.
Just looked on Newegg, there's a Coolmaster RC-330 case for $29.99 with MIR. |

One more thing. On the product specs, it states that the case has a microAtx powersupply. I cant gurantee that your new powersupply will work.
