Having trouble with video

I'm helping a friend build a computer, and no matter what we do, we cannot get video to show up. At the moment, we only have the basic parts installed, just enough for the video test. The system consists of:

Intel DP965LT motherboard
2.6 Gigahertz Intel Core 2 Duo (Conroe)
ATI Radeon x1900 GT video card (PCIE)
2 gigs of 800 mhz A-Data DDR2 ram

My main issue at the moment is that I cannot find the spot to plug in the case speaker. It would help me a lot if I could hear the post beeps to diagnose whatever the problem is. If anyone could help me out, it'd be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

edit*- The video card fan turns on, the motherboard light is on, and the cpu fan spins.

What brand and model power supply are you using? Do you have both the 24pin main power and the extra 2x2 pin power connected?

The motherboard manual should show how to hook up the case connectors.

The power supply is a 600 watt Rosewill, standard ATX type. Both the main power connector and the CPU power are firmly connected.

The problem is, no motherboard manual came with the mobo, and intel doesn't have one posted. -.-

Do you have the external power connector to the video card plugged in?

Your board should have an onboard speaker. It looks like a small black cylinder with a hole on the top. It should be located between the southbridge heatsink and the PCI slots.

Do you have another power supply you could try? Rosewill's aren't the best, it might be a lemon.

Okay, i found the motherboard speaker, but no good. Do you think it could be the power supply? What would it mean if the motherboard is getting power but there aren't any post beeps?

Also, if i leave the computer running for half an hour (even though it doesn't get video), the cpu should heat up, right? I tested that, and mine doesn't. Any more ideas? Your feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Yes, its possible. It can put out enough juice to spin the fans but not to boot the system fully. It would be the easiest thing to check first.

Yes. The base of the heatsink should warm up. If it is cold, the CPU could be a dud. However, C2Ds run very cool, so it might not be heating up enough to be noticeable.

I'd start with the PSU, then move on the other components.

would there be an issue with the motherboard then, if the built in speaker does not work? or could that be a power supply issue as well?

If you try a start up with out the video card and ram, the mother board should put out a beep code that means no ram or no video card. That will at least show that the mobo bios is working.

Most new video cards have an external connector in addition to the power they recieve from the MB. You may have partial power but not enough to fully power the card?

Hmmm. Well all the power connectors are properly connected; that much I am sure of. I'll try the thing that flanzig mentioned, and test whether the motherboard is working or not. So if I don't get any post beeps from the mobo, then it's definitely dead? Or is there possibly something i'm missing?

I think you have a bad power supply...

got another power supply, and have gone through about 10 sticks of ram. those are definitely not the problem. in the process of testing the motherboard.

tested the motherboard without ram and video card. did not get any post beeps. Does this mean that the motherboard is definitely DOA?

Can someone check whether my version of motherboard is supposed to have a build in speaker or not, and what it means if it doesn't beep? I can't find it anywhere.

Double-posting is not highly regarded here - it is best to edit your first post than to add another one in 3 minutes.

If you can, return the motherboard for a new one - that will more than likely fix your problem.

Did you buy an open box motherboard from someplace?

Ummm, i don't know what open box means. But the motherboard was not refurbished, so that's not likely to be the issue. Should i just exchange it then?

Here's the link to the install/use manual at Intel: http://support.intel.com/support/mot...t/lt_howto.htm

Intel motherboards have the internal speaker and no connections are required. If the heatsink stays cool, the motherboard is not starting. This can be only one of 4 things.

1. Something is not connected correctly - power cables, CPU fan, etc.
2. Defective CPU
3. Defective motherboard
4. Defective power supply

You need to troubleshoot out of the case.
