First build
Alright this is my first build so things I'm planning might be a bit off. I've been planning to build for a while now but it seems like my wallet is big enough to make a build now.
I'm planning on building a PC to get back in to PC gaming. I've been playing console games for years but I plan on dropping back into the PC world. So far I have bought a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and OS. The rest I play to order from ncix.com (I'm Canadian). Things I plan to use my PC for: Games Listening to music General web surfing and messaging Lasting for as long as possible without having to upgrade much for a while Now here's a rough copy of my planned build. If you could look over it and give me any suggestions or whatever it would be great. Is the processor more then I need? Should I get a less powerful one to save money? Is the mobo any good? Do I need to go deluxe? The main question is if the memory is any good. I find it confusing to try and find out if memory would work with the motherboard I picked out. The list: Processor: http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...ufacture=Intel $399.99 Motherboard: http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...nufacture=ASUS $285.00 Memory: http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...Z%20Technology $277.67 Video Card: http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...anufacture=ATI $415.70 Hard Drive: http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...tern%20Digital $106.01 Case: http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...ufacture=ANTEC $119.14 Optical Drive: http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...facture=Liteon $29.25 Floppy: http://search.ncix.com/displayproduc...acture=MITSUMI $32.90 Total: $1665.66 |

Your parts are great. Take a look at the Asus P5B motherboard instead of the P5W Deluxe. Compare the features is there is anything you need. The major difference is that the P5B has only 1 PCI-Express slot, which only matters if you were planning on adding another card for Crossfire. I'd stick with one though, its plenty for games.
The E6600 is a very powerful CPU. I would stick with it if you can. But if you need to trim the cost, the E6300 is still a good option, just with less cache. Slightly less powerful, but still solid. Your video card requires a 450w power supply minimum, so you might be cutting it close there. The Antec Sonata is a fantastic choice and has a great PSU, but you might consider a 500 or 550w unit to be safe.

I actually had a PSU picked out, I just forgot to include it. Too lazy to go find it now, but it was a 500 watter.
And I don't have a problem spending that much on a processor, I just didn't know if it'd be worth it over a E6300 or whatever. I'm not tight on money so I can hack it. I'll check out that motherboard. |

Not so new

Make sure the 500w power supply is from a quality, reputable manufacturer. Also, have you looked at the x1950pro and x1950xt as video card alternatives? Needless to say, the x1900xtx is still a good performer.

Are you in the US? You can get the E6600 and your board much cheaper from Newegg.

No I'm Canadian. That's why I'm ordering from ncix, otherwise I'd be all over newegg.
Alright, so I just learned today that I have a PS3 and Wii coming my way this week so that's going to take a large sum of money off of me. Now I've decided to cut a few corners and try to drop a few hundred dollars off here and there. I changed the processor to an E6300 for starters, and took the motherboard suggestion from Alaron. I also changed the video card, which I'm still not sure on but from the reviews I've read it seems like a good card. I don't really want to spend too much on a video card now anyway since I'll drop a DX10 card in once they start becoming more mainstream. I only have a 17inch monitor anyway, so I figure that doesn't need an overly powerful video card to get modern games to run smoothly on. The only other thing is that I'd like to cut corners with the memory, but I'm still confused to what I should pick with regards to memory. I'd be more then happy to just get a few suggestions on the memory which I would like to be cheaper. I'm still a n00b when it comes to computer parts and memory is the part I understand the least. Also, should I still try to get a better PSU? The minimum for this card is still 450w so I figure I should still go for a 500w PSU. Anyway here's my new work in progress: Processor: http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...ufacture=Intel $235.40 Motherboard: http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...nufacture=ASUS $166.75 Memory: http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...Z%20Technology $277.67 Video Card: http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...cture=SAPPHIRE $254.99 Hard Drive: http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...tern%20Digital $106.01 Case: http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...ufacture=ANTEC $119.14 Optical Drive: http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...facture=Liteon $29.25 Floppy: http://search.ncix.com/displayproduc...acture=MITSUMI $32.90 Total: $1222.11 |

That's a very good video card. You'll love the E6300. Mine has been great. The FORUM had to tell me to shut up. That floppy appears to be a USB multi-card reader. Plug that in after you have installed XP. When you get into it, just post in, and we'll walk you thru it.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING. |

I think I found a better memory option. Not sure but it seems better from reviews that I read. It's not much cheaper then what I already had there though.
