First time builder help

Hello everyone,
I need a new cpu for my son for christmas because his wont run the game he wants to play. I looked online for a gaming pc but the ones that were good enough were around 1500 to $2000! There is no way I want to pay that much. So I thought maybe I could build one. So here is my problem. I dont really now what to get specifically. My budget is flexible somewhere between 500 to 700 would be nice. Can someone help me out?

Here's a suggestion:
ASUS P5B Motherboard
INTEL C2D E6300 CPU
1GB Corsair Value Select DDR2667
Sapphire X1600 Pro Video Card
Seagate 7200.10 16mb PDR 250 GB Hard Drive
XClio Goodpower 450watt PSU
Case of your choice
I take it that you have a monitor. Monitors shoot the budget way up.
That's going to lean more toward $800.00 by the time all is said and done. Add extra for your OS if you don't already have that. You can't build an actual gamer for 5-700.

Chuck's list is very good. I have a similar system. Cost $750 for the computer itself with no accessories.

That helps quite a bit. So do I really need such a big hard drive, does that matter? Thx for the list and the fast response.

You don't *need* one, but drives are inexpensive these days. The 250GB is the sweet spot for the most space per dollar.

He wants to play Neverwinter nights 2. the recommended is a 3 ghz pc with 1 gig of ram and different graphics card. They have a list. So would I be wasting money if i went with the Radeon x1950 or should i go for the x1800? Or should I go with nVidia?

The sweet spot right now for price/performance is the 7600gt. It should run that game fine.

a 7600gt is a nvidia card that will run any game on the market today. I'd say 80% of them it will run at MAX settings with framerates ABOVE 60 frames per second. For the other 20%, you would need to dumb the settings down a bit. For instance, changing the screen resolution is a huge one. The lower the screen resolution, the better the frames per second.

that card just may play even the most graphic-intense games on the very highest settings if you had 600x 480 resolution, though I personally like to game in 1024x768 as my resolution... and that is far lower than most people prefer lol.
