Building a new PC, any advice welcomed
Hello all, I am building my second PC for a friend and I'd like your advice if the specs would work together. He is using his old monitor, speakers, keyboard, and mouse and for the time being his old sound card but i will have new sound card listed below. He also has an external HD so he doesn't need a lot of memory on his HD if you are wondering on the amount for the one i picked. This is a gaming computer and I would like any advice you guys would like to share. I appreciate any thoughts and i apologize if i posted in the wrong thread. Thank you for your time. Latas.

Welcome. I created this thread, so you have your own.
Most important item to change is the power supply. That Thermaltake is not ATX 2.0, which you need. It is out of stock right now, but when its back, grab this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817104954 a very nice unit. Your build looks ok otherwise. Have you considered an Intel Core 2 Duo build? They will outperform anything from AMD right now.

I'd stay away from EPoX motherboards, they're made by ECS now.
I built 4 computers using EPoX motherboards back in 2001 and all the boards died within 3 years. I've been sticking with ASUS motherboards for the past 2 years and haven't had any problems with them yet. Is a 80GB HDD enough for your friend...kinda skimpy by today's standards. And I would try the on-board sound before I bought a soundcard. Cricket

I'd recommend a step up to an eVGA 7600gt KO... that is what I use.

K, I will take all of your advice into deep consideration, especially since i want to get this right for my friend. The following are the replies to the above posts:
1) So my powersupply wont work on my current build or it wont be as efficient as the one you mentioned above? I thought i had covered all my bases but thanks for pointing that out. Ty for also starting my own thread. I appreciate it. Ive always used AMD processors and never had any problems so i didnt want to "chance it" on my friends build, plus the AMD users are pretty vocal with their hate of Intel usually stating that Intel processors could heat a house by itself. I understand thats not good reason to base a decision on but ive been content with AMD in the past but i will give Intel a second look now in the future. 2) I didnt know that about Epox, my first Mobo was a ASUS and it went bad in a year so i tried Epox from a recommendation from a friend and it seemed too easy to install and setup and i have been happy since. The reason i got him a 80G HD was he has an external HD with tons of room and he was more concerned on processing power so i focused more resources on his processor and RAM. I understand what you are saying and I personally would want more but he can easily upgrade that later compared to something like a processor. You are right about the sound card and it didnt even cross my mind to use the onboard one >< mental fart there lol. 3) Really? cool, thats a pretty solid video card you got there. I figured that the one i picked would be plenty for his needs and any upgrade from his 4 yr. old pos would suffice. Do you think there would be a big enough difference to go from mine to yours? Ty guys again for your suggestions, as you can tell im still pretty wet behind the ears about this stuff but im willing to learn. TY again. Latas Griff |

Psus come in 2 standard configurations: ATX and ATX 2.0
ATX: 20 pin main connector and 4 pin CPU connector/single rail 12v line/generally have a high currant on the 5v/3.3v for older CPUs ATX 2.0/called also ATX 12v,ATX dual 12v/ATX 24 pin. Newer systems require 24 pin main connections AND a 4 pin CPU power connection. Newer CPUs use the 12v rail verses older ones that used the 5v/3.3v.

If it's a gaming computer, yes, my card would surpass the other.

i would change to core 2 duo and with the money saved get the other video card or even a better one. and if you want to stick with AMD, even if he is playing newer games i dont think the 5200 in necessary, a 4800 or 5000 at the most. (I use a 4800 and im fine with the newest games)
