Intel Processor decision to make
I have a coworker, so to speak, that has decided to have a SysteMax machine built up on TigerDirect. As I haven't built any systems since my P4 2.4Ghz 400mhz fsb box, I don't know how to advise him on what processor is the best bang fo his buck. His wife and he seem to be moderately literate PC users, interested mostly in digital photograhpy and possibly digital video burning. His choices are as follows.
Celeron ???.? at no upcharge. (I have advised him to skip this option) P4 3.0 800fsb $40 upcharge 2.66 D805 $55 2.8 D915 $80 3.4 D945 $120 3.6 D960 $440 These are his available choices. I am pretty sure they will match the mobo with the processor at the top end of supportability, so what do the system building folks here suggest? Any suggestions please include a short reasoning. Thanks in advance.

Do they offer anything among the Core 2 Duo line? Also, I don't want to bash Tiger Direct, but I have heard some horrid things about them and their customer service. I'd look into Dell instead.

Really, all I've heard from my father-in-law who is Senior Network and systems analyst for a major Retailer is how great the systems implemented from TigerDirect have worked out for them. And no these are his available options for the system pricing level he has chosen.

I agree that the Core 2 Duo line is the best way to go if that is an option. If not, I'd stick with the 915 from your list. The tasks you mentioned don't require too much power, so there's no reason to spend more for the faster chips. The 915 offers a good bang for the buck.

Even the Pentium D 805 systems I have built I find are good performers.

Well, he has decided to step up to this system. I think he'll be happy! I don't have a system with this much HP.

That system is decent. I do think it is overpriced however, and I don't like how it comes stock RAID 0.
