New Computer for Mother
Hey everybody, been a long time since ive been active on the forum and in the computer department as well.
Im looking to build my mother a computer, she is an office manager, and all she really uses is Word, Excel, AOL, and some anti virus programs. I was thinking about getting her one of those intel duos. I would like to to be able to multi-task well with fast load times. I dont have any parts, so if you guys can give your opinion while i start putting things to gether that would be great. Thanks in advance. |

Forgot to say, i think well start with a budget of say $800. She has a monitor keyboard mouse.

Antec cases generally come with quality Antec power supply units - you can generally be assured of its quality. In terms of the graphics card listed above, do you need a high-level graphics card for doing low-level applications? Will this be strictly an office system?

Pretty much an office system. Nothing high level, but not something crappy. Either a 128mb or 256mb.

I think a Pentium D 805 would be extremely sufficient with 1GB RAM. Use the onboard videocard since she's not into gaming.

I agree with his recommendation. I don't know about the Pentium D 805 because I haven't used Pentium since the 1Ghz processors, but any modern processor will do fine with 1GB RAM and onboard video for office work.
128 or 256 MB of RAM is not good, it's barely enough to operate Windows... |

Putting a C2D is a little bit of overkill for a small office PC - get a normal rock-solid motherboard like the P5B first, and then 1GB DDR2 RAM, and a Pentium D 805 or a 915. Then spend a little bit more on a better stable PSU.

Looks nice... please note that particular Liteon doesn't have burning software - you want a retail one or one of the OEMs that actually have the software (see product images).
The 915 runs hot, the Pentium D 805 is not so bad, though, so consider that. Wow... that is odd. I canceled because my post wouldn't go through, I go back and post another one and magically the first one appears. Sorry about that, my mistake. |

I would look into to just getting a Dell for her. You can probably get a new one for under $500. My 5 year old 800mhz system I have now can do everything she is wanting to do and more. Just my opinion but that's what I would do.

I'd recommend still building your own computer. Looks like you have the budget to do so. Yes, I recommend the 805 to you. A retail version of the Liteon burner would be nice: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106015 - I cannot find the OEM Liteon(s) that come with software.
