Updating My System - What needs to be replaced?
Hi everyone, I'm new here but here is my question.
I have had my system built about 2-3years ago and a relatively good one. I am including an attachment of the specs I could detect using some free online software (in two parts). Hopefully, you can understand what everything is :P The issue I'm having now is with performance and gaming capability. I do not play first-person shooter games like CS but i do enjoy a good strategy or simulation. Right now the most my computer can pull off is SimCity4 and it is very slow on a large map at "high detail" setting. I want to play newer games such as Civilization IV, Anno1701 and CityLife. (I have also attached the recommended system requirements for those games) So my guess is I have to upgrade my videocard and processor, however I have a feeling my motherboard can't support a higher CPU so i will need a new motherboard and I also think I have Rambus memory sticks which are obsolete now and so a new motherboard will require new memory (DDR2?). I could be wrong about any/all of the above tho :P So check the attachments. I would like to stay under 1000$ CAN dollars - the cheaper the better though. The store I go to to get parts is www.canadacomputers.com. So if anyone could go through their lists of parts and tell me what is the best thing for me to get I would greatly appreciate it cause I have no clue whats better and whats compatible :S I don't need the latest 5000$ video card, but at the same time I dont wanna spend money on something that will be obsolete next year. So I would like to be able to meet strategy game requirements for the next few years. I'm not sure if i'm asking for the impossible. But please let me know what the thoughts are. Thanks, Anatoli |

Do you have a processor brand preference? AMD or INTEL?
Is the $1000 budget only for the computer or does it also include the peripherals (monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers)? Are you going to re-use your copy of WinXP Pro? Cricket

The 1000$ is just for the parts i need to upgrade to meet the requirements of all these new games...If its possible to upgrade for 500$ datd be great! But looking at the prices on the videocards and motherboards/CPUs everything is like at least 200$ :S
I have a nice monitor and keyboard and all that. I don't have a preference for AMD or Intel? why does it matter? as long as all the parts are compatible and i have to replace as little stuff as possible its all good. And yes i will keep my Win XP.. is that an issue? Anatoli |

Can your board use C2D. If so I would recomend the 6300.
Also you might want to look at the 7900gt.

Looks like you'll need a new board - a system with a 1.5GHz P4 won't support much of an upgrade. If you don't have a perference towards AMD or Intel, then I would highly suggest the Intel Core 2 Duo route...

The Simcity 4 runs best on Intel Pentium 4 w/ HT - check the website. If you are into Simcity only - a cheaper Pentium 4 5xx series with HT will work perfect.
other than that, you might consider a Pentium D, or an X2 or best of all, Core 2 Duo.

Yeah it looks like you need a basic redo there, psu, cpu, ram, mobo, vid card, and the like. You can use your monitor, keyboard, case.
You can use Win XP just fine.... |
